Xbox's Phil Spencer says "1080p isn't some "Mythical, Perfect Resolution"

    Link to the article:

So what do you guys think? Granted, this is most likely damage control for the fact that the Xbox One is struggling to hit 1080p on certain games, compared to the PS4 which is having an easier time of it. But I honestly think there is some merit to what he's saying.

I myself have a 60", 1080p, 240Hz LED TV and think that even the Xbox One games at 900p (but upscaled to 1080p) still look pretty damn good. Most people would never even know the difference unless you had two identical TVs next to each other, and had an XO hooked up to one and a PS4 hooked up to the other. And even then, I bet some people still wouldn't be able to tell the difference in resolution, especially from the normal viewing distance of a couch.

And I do think that better FPS is more important, especially depending on the type of game. I'm willing to have a 900p game that runs smoothly as opposed to a 1080p game that is choppy and laggy. Granted, that problem could have been solved if MS had just put more powerful hardware in their console like Sony did, but still. IMO, smoother gameplay > a few extra pixels. And even Sony is having issues getting the PS4 to run above 30 FPS on certain games where they are determined to get 1080p at all costs.

What do you all think? Just damage control on XO's part? Or is there some merit to what is being said? Is it better to have higher FPS and smoother gameplay? Or is it better to have some more pixels and a possibly choppier experience?

It still shocks me 1080p is such a struggle for consoles. Everyone I know has moved onto 1440p for pc. I do think smooth is better, depending on the game but I can see the difference in resolutions quite a bit. Was a huge diff when I went from 720 - 1080 tvs, and scaling usually results in a poorer image but I've had little time with an xbone so I can't say how it in particular looks.

It's him in damage control, same shit he's in for lying about tomb raider being an exclusive. He'll just say whatever he thinks will end up resulting in more xbox sales, he wants to "win the war".

Damage control, the XO is getting crushed by the PS4 in sales.

1080p is a couple of years old. Not being able to achieve it on a console is pretty awful imo.

Legit the ONLY thing a console has going for it, is exclusives and the ability to play multiplayer with others in the same room.

I agree. Neither console should be struggling at all in 2014 to obtain 1080p/60fps in games. Even though the PS4 is hitting it more often, it is still struggling with certain games (as seen in some of its games being locked in at 30fps or running in what is basically 1080i and not true 1080p). Oh well, maybe the next gen of consoles will actually give us at least 1440p gaming at 60-120fps :P.

And yeah, it totally is damage control. But there is still merit in what is being said. If a console can't reach 1080p/60fps, then at least keep it as close as possible to 1080p, but give us a smoother game experience in its place.

Edit: Most 1440p monitors are still to expensive for my tastes. Considering 4K monitors are here now and have even started to come down in price, the price of 1440p monitors for some reason has remained ridiculously high in comparison IMO. I myself haven't moved to 1440p gaming yet even though my rig could handle it (i7-3770K, GTX 780ti, 16GB RAM) because of how stupidly overpriced 1440p monitors still are.

There is another thread here on MMO-C that was asking the question of why people choose to game on consoles instead of PCs, and needless to say, there are A LOT more reasons than those two that people choose to buy them.

Because the only way to keep the console costs down to their current levels is to use out-dated hardware. They cant afford to use high end cards when they alone cost more then an entire console does.
Yet the public demands ever increasing graphic levels because that is what the industry has been pushing release after release so they can get away with copy pasted gameplay and limited innovation.
Looking good has become more important then good gameplay, during development.
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

It doesn't really matter for me tbh, same with that 60fps propaganda.
Last two games I played was The Last of us Remastered and Infamous Second Son. Both game run at 60 fps (well at least TLoU, I:SS isn't locked), and both have an option to lock them at 30 fps.
You know what? Maybe I'm old gamer, and im my times nobody cared about it, and people believed human eye can't see more than 30 fps, but I really can't see a difference.
Nowdays superkids says even 60 fps isn't enough and they want 120 on their super duper 3k$ PCs

Well he is right. The bigger the resolution teh better, though it doesn't reallu help him with his 900p console...

He's right. I'd rather get lower resolution/graphics for 60+ fps. But that doesn't justify putting 4-5 year old hardware in their latest consoles, then make a teaser for the next big game with amazing graphics and framerate. Only to release a steaming pile of crap that barely pulls 30fps on the new consoles. And in the meantime keep PC players waiting for a bad to semi-decent port...

Or am I just expecting too much from multi-billion dollar companies?

1080p is not a mythical resolution, but it is the perfect resolution for every real HDTV TV on the market since 1080P is the native HD 16:9 resolution. No pixel scaling. 1 pixel in game = 1 pixel on the TV. Once nearly all have 4K TVs then 4K will be the perfect resolution. Right now it's 1080p. No magic here, just facts.

720P and everything else below 1080P is not native and is forcing to scale the image, make it look worse.

I was thinking of things a console does that my PC doesn't. Everything else it does my PC does better. Playing DvD's, streaming TV, browsing the internet. VoIP.

I almost want to link the song anything you can do i can do better than you. Because that's basically the PC's theme song :P

That's not what he's saying. He's saying better FPS and a smoother gameplay experience is better than obtaining 1080p at all times, but having a choppier experience because of it.

Everyone and their mother has a 1080p tv so it sucks it failed to deliver.

    Most TV's now are 1080p.
If the console can't do native resolution... Yeah... Damage control.

Honestly, I could care less about *actual* resolution on a console if the game still looks crisp. Framerate is a different story.

Having a 144Hz computer monitor with the hardware to make games take advantage of it and a 240Hz TV in my living room, I can honestly say I would rather have a game with a higher FPS with a small hit to graphics, as opposed to the opposite.

A game can look absolutely amazing, but if the FPS drop to abysmal levels when I move the character in-game, it will totally kill enjoyment for me.

Seeing as we slowly advance towards four times the resolution, which will be nearing standard for TV and home media at the time the next console generation is designed, they'd better start getting 1080p running at good frame rates, everything else means knockout in this harsh business. See Nintendo - they fell behind one generation in display quality, and even though trying to compensate it with "revolutionary" innovations they still suffer from it today to the point where people wished they'd give up their consoles entirely and just start making software for others.
Your rights as a consumer begin and end at the point where you choose not to consume, and not where you yourself influence the consumed goods.

Translation: if you don't like a game don't play it.

human eye can distiguish individual frame up to 120 FPS for the trained eye. For everyone the difference between 30 and 60 is just enormous. It's not that you can't see it, it is that you are satisfied with 30 FPS and since console can't do better, you have accepted that it is good enough.

i run dead space 2 at near 200 FPS, i didn't see much difference between 100 and 200 FPS frankly, bu 30 FPS is just horrible for me. When you are used to have all game at 60+ FPS, 30 FPS is just a slide show.

Reguarding the resolution, although i usually play at 1920*1200 i do not care as much, i could play at 720p if necessary. If the game world is nicely detail and run smoothly at 60 FPS, that is the most important. 1080p or 1440p is better obviously, not as important.

Will be interesting to see what happens when the next gen of consoles come after the PS4/XO because 4K TVs probably will be considered the standard by then. Can you imagine MS and Sony coming out with consoles that are struggling to do something like 1440p or 1600p when a lot of people's TVs will have 4K native resolution?

He is right i would rather Destiny at 720p at 60fps then 1080p at 30fps.

Destiny beta especially MP was awful at 30fps.
