Hey @Hellravager how are things with the GF going? Last time I was in thread things seemed to be doing good. Was just curious.

This was one of my fav scenes.

Finished my re-watch of Serial Experiments Lain ("LAIN"). It verified some things I had previously said while calling into question others.

First and foremost, the biggest change for me was that I was completely unphased by the surreal elements of LAIN. I reacted very negatively to them the first time around, viewing them as functioning more to obscure the content than to aid it. Many years later I find this view no longer holds true; I found LAIN perfectly reasonable to follow with the atmosphere now being a definite bonus to the series rather than a hindrance. This single point probably went a long way to improving my enjoyment.

Beyond this my knowledge of the general arc of the show and what it was about helped tremendously to make it surprisingly clear. I felt far more oriented and prepared to interpret what was going on. It made me actually really enjoy the middle part of the series and I watched most of it in one sitting (although I found myself far less enthusiastic about the last couple of episodes).

Finally, I felt a far smaller need to harp on the philosophy of it. As we already discussed before, I have a certain view on the philosophy of the series but I didn't have the same contempt for it that I did going in. Why this is I am uncertain: my actual assessment of the series didn't change, just my attitude. In fact, that sentence really summarizes my whole experience.

Anyway, I've thought about doing a full-scale review on it (I haven't done one of those in a while...) but I'm concerned that it may be very difficult for me to properly express my views on the series without partially explaining my own vantage point, in which case the review is mostly me explaining myself rather than LAIN. That's not really what a review should be about.

p.s. Lain (the girl) really struck me this time around with her design. It just...worked.

    - - - Updated - - -

Edit: I do however hold to my general rejection of its view of humanity, however. That was one thing that I noticed repeatedly in the discussions about human nature, evolution, etc. This probably also accounts for my strange simultaneous acceptance-yet-rejection of the last couple of episodes. I agree with the assessment that the body is important alongside the mind. The problem is that I don't just view them as "inseparable." They are more extensions of the same thing: our dream of a dissociated consciousness, with no reference to the body, is really just a rationalist dream that is long overdue. So the message at the end, where Lain rejects God on the basis of not understanding with no body, is one that I can almost agree with but at the same time completely reject the framing of.

Mob Psycho and New Game being the top "normal" series was cool though. Sad to see Amaama, Shokugeki, and Orange sell so abysmally. Hilarious to see Berserk not even rank.

I'll be interested to see how well Tales sells, just to see if Ufotable will go bankrupt anytime soon, or manage to actually sell something before the Stay Night movies.

Not surprising, shit doesn't sell very well.

tokyo ravens (anime) and dr strange (movie) is tokyo ravens based off dr strange? they have a few similarities. The cloaks as a beginner. usually the spells involve altering the natural order of things. and at the end of the toyko ravens anime the one girl says that their world is just a part of a vast universe, which is more or less what dr strange is about

Amaama had great TV ratings though. Not surprised it didn't sell well, but didn't expect it to sell that badly.

Streaming revenue has more importance then BD/DVD sales anyway these years, amount of bd/dvd's isn't the only thing that makes a series successful.

A big reason why DBS is now streamed free now.

Uh, I really don't think that's true. The biggest market is still in Japan and streaming there is barely worth mentioning.

BD/DVD still aren't everything, though. For Manga/LN adaptations, a lot of the times the boost in sales for the source material is more important than selling BDs.

Yeah, but BD/DVD sales are important for the studio. I'm more interested in how well the studio that made it did, though a boost on source material or merchandise can greenlight a second season with poor anime sales. I believe that's how Shokugeki got a second season.

They also showcase popularity for late night anime fairly well. Not perfectly, but a good indicator.
