Erik the Red got banished/exiled from Norway along with his father for manslaughter, so he sailed west and ended up in Iceland. Then, Iceland sentenced him to exile for killing a couple of people, and then sailed further west and discovered Greenland.


Great legacy as an explorer when your discoveries are just based on sailing further west every time someone exiles you.

the whole Greenland expedition is hilarious to me. He wanted people to go with him and thus named the place Greenland, thinking, it sounds better than Iceland. then they all died to pirates, eskimos and disease.
