Former People: the Fate of Russian Aristocrats after the 1917 revolution

    http://www.amazon.com/Former-People-.../dp/1250037794
    http://www.popmatters.com/review/176...-by-douglas-s/

Ever wonder what happened to the Russian aristocracy once Lenin and Stalin took over? This book goes into detail.

The revolution overthrew the Tsars but there was also the aristocracy.

One of the most interesting aspects of the revolution is that the aristocracy actually embraced liberal views and believed in expanding workers rights. They felt it was enlightened. They tried to distance themselves from the Tsar who they felt was less receptive to those ideas. As it turns out, being a leftist liberal did not save any aristocrat. During the revolution, the aristocracy was punished just as severely, having their wealth and homes stripped from them, getting killed, or thrown in the Gulag. The lucky were those that fled to other nations and became exiles.

Before I opened the thread, I made a guess: Same thing that happens to every ruling class in a revolution?

    Yep, I was right.

Interestingly, the fall of the communist rule instantly created a new aristocracy because of the shitty way they divided the wealth into private hands.

I think you may be stretching the definition of "innocent" past its breaking point.

Perhaps the best example of why a revolution is not bringing the "people" what it wants/needs.
Russia only became worse after the last Tsar was killed.

I believe it all went wrong because Tsar Nicholas II lacked any sort of experience as a ruler + the war made it even worse.

A lot of Russians immigrated to the US during this period. We call them White Russians, they live on the East Coast mostly.

A white émigré refers to a Russian subject who emigrated from Imperial Russia in the wake of the Russian Revolution and Russian Civil War, and who was in opposition to the contemporary Russian political climate.

Maybe it means Belarus in Germany?

    White Russian can refer to:

    1. The country Belarus, which means White Russia.
    2. Russians who fought against the Bolsheviks, and counted Britain and the US amongst their backers.
    3. The cocktail.

Wildtree is getting 1 and 2 mixed up, possibly due to the German for Belarus translating as White Russia, or maybe due to him having a few too many of 3.

Hubcap is talking about 2, hence the confusion.

In Russian, Bela is shortened for white and rus is obviously shortened Russia...
