So now gear does not matter right? So if I don't equip any gear what so ever or weapon it won't matter?
Also, how do I gain affection now seeing how every gift I have reads that it does not increase affection?

Dialogue options (same as before) and gifts. You likely just have gifts your current companion doesn't like, because they definitely still work.

ok thanks...what about weapons for companion are they purely aesthetic? I get they need to equip something for abilities but a level 1 empty weapon is just as good as any right?

Yeah gear is purely for aesthetics/looks on companions, they'll perform the same if they were naked.

Well, if you have a companion that uses a ranged weapon they will have to run up to punch things : P
