Torn on a decision with an apartment...

My husband and I have to move out of the house we are living in (the owner wants to sell) so we decided an apartment would be our best bet while he works on his certifications at work.

We looked at a few apartments today and found one that we felt perfect. Perfect location for us, and size, good schools, and it's close to the hospital where my son receives his therapies. While it's nothing fancy, it's what we need.

Now, keep in mind, it's myself, my husband and my two year old son. With that said, after looking at the apartments, we were given a contract to bring home and sign, then bring back to lock in the November special. Well, after doing so, I was looking at it on various sites and saw something somewhat (OK very) shocking...there was a shooting at this complex, two people died. Was not domestic, no forced entry, young couple, but no other details were given.

Now, I'm sure after reading the last couple sentences, you see my cause for concern. The apartments, location, size and price wise is perfect for us..but..just that little shooting incident....

I'm just wondering what others would consider doing..

Check where section 8 housing is located in the area and the crime rate in the area as well to see if it's a place you really want to be staying around. I've seen entire neighborhoods ruined and property devalued so much that almost all the houses became vacant because of high density section 8 housing located across the street or even miles away sometimes. No one wants to live in an area where the likely hood of being a victim of crime is high.

Find out about the case. My apartment had a shooting a few months ago. One of the guys died. Turns out the guy that died was one of 2 people that tried to home invade one of their buddies. He had a gf and small kid inside, so the roomate of the target of the invasion shot the home invaders. If its something like that, I wouldnt put too much stock into it...unless that kind of situation happens regularly.

I highly doubt someone is going back to that apartment to shoot them over and over, when someone moves in .

If the area is ideal for you guys, I assume it's a low-crime area as well. Enjoy your new apartment!

I live in a very high end neighborhood in my city. In the last few months alone, I've had texts about armed suspects, an Amber alert, personally witnessed assault and battery, given statements to police...

Yet I still feel completely safe.

Actually, I felt less safe when I lived in a white-picket fence suburban place.

    This.

If it's a ton of section 8 housing nearby, no deal.

Lightning will not strike twice. I am sure the apartment complex will be fine.

    It's like google maps.

Shows you all the crime in your area. Has advanced search. Shows you where the sex offenders are. Seems like not all areas have the data.

The incident I mentioned happened in September 2015. I also found out by doing a little more research there was another shooting, resulting in another death (that makes 3 total) in 2014. To say the least, we decided to pass (Also, thanks to the criminal link, we found that a sex offender lives across the street from the complex), that site will prove to be useful, and we decided that no matter what apartment we get, we will be getting a wireless security system.

Thanks for the opinions on the matter =), here's to hoping we find a better place before the deadline to get out of our house passes =)

Definitely better safe than sorry. Especially if you have other options.

Hopefully you can find something that suits your needs!

    90% that's a murder/suicide. That's not really something that's the apartment complex's fault.

Edit: Oh wait was NOT domestic. Not sure then, but you should be able to inquire the police because this is somewhere you're looking to live. I think it depends on the state whether they can disclose anything.

Try to find bigger picture crime stats for that area. Contact your city/county law enforcement if you need to - their website should have some sort of stats page. One incident is a flag, but it's not a deal breaker.

Renting sucks, sometimes you never know until after you signed everything. That's what happened to the first place I ever rented, went by to check on it a day or two before we moved in, someone had popped the sliding glass door, turned the AC on high, and spray painted the walls with grafitti, that should have been a huge sign, but the management fixed everything, got us a door brace, so we moved in. We were there a month or two before the drug deals started, police drive throughs. Between that and then problems in the apartment we didn't resign the lease.

Alarm systems are great at letting you know when you're about to become a victim.

But if its your sole means of defense you're basically betting that some feral degenerate is going to be scared off by a loud noise.

Combine an alarm with a defensive position and a firearm and you've increased your chances of survival significantly.

And I'll concur with everybody's warnings about section 8, stay the hell away from that at all costs.

If you feel a bad vibe don't buy it. It's where you'll put a big chunk of money, where you will live with your kids, etc. etc.
