Welcome to 2016 Chicago - 1 Dead, 14 Wounded by Gun Violence During Festivities

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...231-story.html

The first reported homicide victim of 2016 had only been at a New Year’s Eve party in Bronzeville for an hour when a fight inside spilled out onto St. Lawrence Avenue, a partygoer said early Friday morning.

Two people were shot in the 4600 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue at about 2 a.m., police said. One of them, a 24-year-old man, reportedly had been arguing with someone who pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest. He was declared dead on the scene

Emergency workers guided a sobbing woman away from the scene.

“Let me wake up! Let me wake up!” she cried. “No! No! No! No! No!"

An hour later, mourners began to arrive in waves. A woman in a pink coat punched a parked car so hard she left a dent. Another woman who had been sitting in the middle of the street cried out, “This is bogus! This is bogus as hell! Who would do him like this?”

Another person, a 38-year-old man, showed up at Provident Hospital where he was in good condtion with a gunshot wound to the hand, said Officer Nicole Trainor, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Police Department.

In the latest homicide, a 36-year-old man was shot in the chest and died at a hospital, Trainor said.

The shooting happened at 6:40 a.m. in the 1900 block of West Garfield Boulevard in the city’s Back of the Yards neighborhood, said Trainor.

The victim was driving a sport-utility vehicle westbound on Garfield when he heard shots and realized he’d been wounded, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Police.

The 36-year-old was driven to the Artesian Avenue and 55th Street where an ambulance was called and he was taken to Stroger Hospital where he died, Trainor said.

His identitiy was not being made public yet.

From Thursday afternoon to 8 a.m. Friday, shootings in Chicago left one person dead and at least 14 people injured.

At about 6:20 a.m. Friday, a 29-year-old man was shot in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

He was in the 5400 block of South Halsted Street when he was shot in the shoulder. He was taken to Stroger Hospital. No further information was immediately available about his condition or the circumstances of the shooting, Sedevic said.

On the West Side about 4:30 a.m. a 26-year-old man showed up at Rush Hospital with a gunshot wound to the left leg, Tranior said. He was in good condition and told authorities he was shot in the 600 block of North Kostner Avenue in the city’s West Humboldt Park neighborhood.

At 2:44 a.m. Friday, three men were shot in the Chatham neighborhood, authorities said.

They were at a gas station in the 7500 block of South State Street when shots were fired from a nearby vehicle.

A 26-year-old was shot in the leg, a 20-year-old was shot in the back and a 22-year-old man was shot in the arm. They took themselves to St. Bernard Hospital and their conditions were stabilized.

At about 2:30 a.m. Friday, two 24-year-old men were shot in the Beverly neighborhood, said Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago Police spokesman.

They were in the 9800 block of South Beverly Avenue when one was shot in the hand and the other was shot in the leg, Gaines said. They went to Advocate Christ Medical Center, but specific information on their conditions was not immediately available.

At 12:50 a.m. Friday, a 38-year-old man was shot in the Burnside neighborhood, said Officer Amina Greer, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

He was at a party in the 9200 block of South Drexel Avenue when he got into an argument with someone who pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest and back, Greer said, adding he went to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition.

The first reported shooting of 2016 happened five minutes after midnight in the South Chicago neighborhood, where a 34-year-old woman was grazed by a bullet shot through the window at a residence in the 8000 block of South Paxton Avenue, Greer said. She went to Advocate Trinity Hospital in good condition.

At about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, an 18-year-old man was shot in the Englewood neighborhood, said Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago Police spokesman.

He was in the 7000 block of South Laflin Street when he was shot in the hand. He took himself to Holy Cross Hospital and was listed in good condition. He may have shot himself, Gaines said.

At 8:15 p.m. Thursday, a 30-year-old man was shot in the Washington Park neighborhood, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago police spokesman.

He was pulling into a driveway in the 6200 block of South Martin Luther King Jr. Drive when he was shot in the leg. His condition was stabilized, but no information was immediately available about where he was being treated.

At 4:45 p.m. Thursday, a 28-year-old man was shot in the Englewood neighborhood, Sweeney said. He was in the 7200 block of South Aberdeen Street when he was shot in the leg, according to preliminary information. No further information was immediately available.

About 3:10 p.m., two people were shot in the South Austin neighborhood, Sweeney said.

A 24-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were in the 1000 block of North Lorel Avenue arguing with someone when that person pulled out a gun and began firing.

They took themselves to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park. The man was shot in the leg and his condition was stabilized. The woman, who was shot in the stomach, was listed in serious condition and later transferred to Stroger Hospital.
Is this normal for the US? Kind of scary so many events in such a small time period in a small city.

    A "small city", Chicago?
Human progress isn't measured by industry. It's measured by the value you place on a life.

    Just, be kind.

They need to hit the reset button in that city. It would do the entire state some good.

It doesn't even make the top 100 by population.

So what? It still isn't tiny and US cities aren't small.

Chicago isn't small. It seems the people who think so have never been and probably are not even American.

Chicago is hands down considered a major city alongside New York LA and Houston.

Only 1 dead? Someone needs to put in some target practice at the shooting range.

With so many millions of people there will be a homicide victim on a daily basis. Improvement will take time and patience, no amount of reactionary laws is going to change that.

Chicago is a global city. I don't know how anyone could consider it small.

Anyways, people around here rightfully don't trust their local police, and in turn get communities where shit like this happens regularly due to lack of honest policing and no community cohesion. It's a mess that won't be fixed any time soon, especially by kneejerk legislation that doesn't look at the root of the problem. It's hard for people who have never lived in these areas to see why they're so fucked up. It's largely due to socioeconomics and a lack of good policing. It will take a combination of the communities owning up to their failings and the police being better trained and willing to do their damned jobs properly. The people who agitate for less policing though just make it worse.

Compared to China perhaps. One major factor in our violence rates (which are relatively low despite what media fearmongering would lead you to believe) is the number of large high-pop metropolitan centers that we have. America has many more than most developed countries and these areas tend to be magnets for crime especially when you factor in our fucked up drug laws and justice system.
