    rude cashier

so sometimes i stop at my local grocery store a little close to closing. recently, there has been this cashier at closing who is very rude. the last time i was in there, the manager was standing right beside everyone at the desk and this kid was cussing under his breath.

today I ran my card and it usually prompts me for my PIN number immediately after swiping my card but today it was asking me for an account number. This has never happened at any store I have ever visited in the 10 some years that I have owned a bank card. when i asked what was up with the machine, the guy got frustrated and basically treated me like an idiot. like, this is the first thing he did. there was no effort to explain it. there was no, oh the machines a little weird today or this one is different it was just "what did you run it as? credit? then hit credit." like duh. after that he rolled his eyes and let out the kind of sigh you do when you are disappointed in someone.

    Just. Like. That.

So straight up I told him every time I am in here he is rude as fuck asked him what his problem was because we were going to have one if he kept acting like that and that he better get his shit straight. Kid looked like a deer caught in the headlights. I sat there and gave him a chance to say something while I looked him dead in the eye. Didn't say anything.

I don't want the kid to lose his job because at the end of the day we all need money and I'm just trying to get some groceries. But idk what the point of this thread is. I guess I'm just kind of annoyed. Like, I feel like I handled things the way I wanted to, but it's just kind of falling short of satisfaction.

I let it go last time because I did come in very late and I was the only person in the store and he probably already had his drawer counted so I could sympathize a little bit. But today there were like 5 other people in the store. Should I report him? I don't want to, but every time I see him there I can see it in his body language and the tone of his voice. He doesn't even want to be there. Yeah, that's normal when you're that close to getting off. What's not normal is that he isn't even trying to hide it.

Might be better to make a job opening for somebody else.

The cashier is immature, but what about the person who makes a long post whining about such a trivial thing on the internet nobody else really wants to know about?

    Ironic.

If you see a topic you don't want to discuss, then don't.

Damn I know, it's like rocket science.

This is the problem. You should try explaining to him that he shouldn't behave a certain way to customers because of his own situation. Since he isn't even trying and you already talked to him, I'd suggest reporting him only if he keeps bothering you after you told him what was the problem.

Maybe you should try explaining it to his boss. If the boss responds in the same rude way, reporting them both is a valid option. Or just change the store.

Hmm sounds like the guy was having a rough go, that being what it is, there is no excuse to treat you that way, I think you handled it well, and the situation is resolved, however if it still bothering you speak to his boss.

I think your concern for his well being is great, but you aren't responsible for his actions, him being fired really isn't your call either way, If it bothers you, just explain your concerns with the manager, and at least just let him know you like him to be aware of it.

Who knows maybe you aren't the only one he has done that to, or maybe his behavior is not typical, and there something else wrong. Either way it's too bad you had to experience that, I hope your next experience turns out better.

If nobody really cares what others post on the internet why do you bother either. You're free to piss off as well ya know <3 I mean you cared enough to enter ironic bitch mode.

OT, screw that guy. i'd complain. It might actually get him to change something about his life.

Just because I don't want to know, doesn't mean I don't want to discuss.

But that nuance is probably beyond you.

I've lived here in this town for 2 years and never had a problem with any employees in this store and actually dated a girl from there and even though we aren't together anymore we've had no issue. I'm not really worried about his manager being rude because help route owners service this store in it's busy months so I'm good with everyone there.

But yeah that's what I'm thinking. I'm just shocked that an employee would treat customers like that when I've had a positive experience otherwise shopping there.

No one sane cares to know about trivial stuff like how many times you shower a day etc etc. But you know, it's normal to care about what people post on the off-topic forums. But you know, carry on white knighting.

If you were as rude to him IRL as your posted interaction then you're just as guilty as he is. Being a jackass to a jackass doesn't make you any better. My guess is you're embellishing to seem like a tough guy like most people do.

Hence, the irony. Both parties are immature.

Seeking advice for something as trivial as this when all it takes is making up one's mind. Not even a difficult dilemma.

I mean you say you like to discuss but that requires being somewhat constructive, which is still nowhere to be found regarding the topic at hand.

Being a cashier myself I can understand being rude to customers. Sometimes customers forget that a cashier deals with 100's of people a day and if more than a few are rude to us we get a bit cranky. However from this story it just sounds like the guy doesn't like his job.

I've never had bad experiences from people that work in stores/supermarkets/etc. I'm always polite to them and open to small-talk, which they appreciate.
Heard of many examples of people being rude however. All I can say is that it's highly unproffesional, since you are working in a place that's supposed to provide for the customers and satisfy their needs.

So you are entering a discussion about something you don't even want to know, which usually leads nowhere. I guess you're alright if you think it's good talk?

Sounds like you would make a post 3 times longer if you had to deal with me.

Also I do not care either, I just enjoy reading the butthurt but I couldn't get past halfway tbh
I may not agree with what you say but I will fight to the death to defend your right to say it.

I'm willing to bet it didn't happen at all the way the OP has written it.

Speak to his manager, as someone who deals with the public the cashier is the public face of the business, under no circumstance should the cashier EVER have an attitude with the customers as they are the ones that ultimately pay his wages. It does not matter how bad of a day he is having outside of work, or how bad of a time the last customer may have given him cashiers and customer facing personnel should treat each customer with the utmost respect and professionalism.

In the many years that I have done in retail, both as management and as a cashier I have never had a machine ask for an account number, I have had cards that don't ask for a pin number, but they are usually corporate cards that require a signature or cards from overseas banks. If the card machine asked for an account number then I would immediately stop using it and contact management or the card machine provider for advice.

PIN number - This irks me me on a personal level think about it.

Because it's fun to point out the hypocrisy in people, that doesn't mean I want to know grandfather tales about how someone has a meltdown over being snubbed in public.

Discussions can certainly be non constructive, especially when the original post isn't to begin with. I do so love a free pass at an argument when people draw false equivalences between two different things.

youve obviously never been a cashier.
I work at a gas station and daily truck drivers want to argue with me over the offroad deisel pump, no, its not legal to use that in your truck.
After being asked and debated by idiot customers twenty times in one day you get a little pissy.
also don't fuck with people close to a stores closing, they want to go the hell home.

fortunately my boss would not fire me if i got into a yelling match with a customer, because my coworkers and he himself have.

Worst thing for me is when you get some right wierdos on the checkouts... i cant help but laugh Im a fucker for laughing at peoples misfortunes. (Not disabilities before anyone wonders)
