    Do you know Karate?

Do you know Karate, or any other form of discipline that you can use in a fight, if so what is your proficiency?

What belt are you,and how well do you think you could handle yourself in a fight?

Personally I have taken some Kickboxing and stay in reasonable shape, but I never fancied myself a Commando or anything, but I do often wonder with all the disciplines out there especially growing up how many people ONLINE could legitimatly consider themselves a bad ass or lethal weapon of sorts with their bare hands.

No. Only fighting "technique" I know is what we learned in the military.. So punching, kicking, a few ways of getting out of grips and controlling someone on the ground.

It's not fancy, it doesn't look cool, it doesn't require special outfits.. But it does work.

I do not consider myself a lethal weapon or a bad ass, no.

But if let say you were in a town and the people needed to round up a posse to defend it, do you think you could throw down in hand to hand combat if need be, like how many do you think you could take out in such a situation?

I am talking like full grown men.

I'd be very confused as to what I was doing in the old west, but yes I could join the fight.

If I could take anyone at all would depend on whether or not they were better than me. I think against an average guy in the street I stand a decent chance.

So like do you say maybe you could take out one other person, or do you think have the skill to maybe take 1 or 2, like this is for survival?

I hold two back belts. One in Tang Soo Do, and one in Kodenkan Jujitsu. I spent eight years doing full contact fighting in both the martial arts and medieval armored re-enactment scenes to include both dismounted fighting and jousting. Does a black belt mean I can "kick anybody's ass", or that I KNOW karate, absolutely not. Attaining the first level of black belt simply means that you have learned the basics of the art as defined by those teaching you and are ready to refine your techniques and learn more. Any "black belt" that tells you otherwise needs to get over themselves because one maxim that always holds true is that there is ALWAYS someone out there that is better or luckier than you with very few exceptions.

No, I've never had any kind of training or anything. I haven't thrown a punch since I was in middle school (stood up to a bully and ended up getting a couple days in detention for that one, but it was worth it just to see the look on his face when this skinny kid half his size hulked out and went apeshit on him).

I'd be more of a "brawler" type in any kind of a fight, I guess. So....I'd just start swinging and hope I got lucky. I'm not really a big guy, so luck would probably be involved quite a bit. I do have a friend who has a black belt and taught us a couple of "tricks" last time we got together, and I got a few pointers from my dad as I was growing up (stuff like leaning in to the punch, etc) but that's about the extent of it.

I also wouldn't care about fighting dirty. If kicking a dude really hard in the nuts is going to end the fight, I wouldn't hesitate. Any kind of "bro code" shit would get thrown out the window, since anyone who forces me to defend myself in a fight is not my "bro" anyway.

My first degree test consisted in part of having to defend myself for a reasonable amount of time against three second or higher degree black belts. In my experience doing medeival re-enactment fighting which was absolutely full contact and not larping my personal best was six, however none of them were particularly skilled. Practicing anything makes you better at it. Practicing the knowledge of turning someone elses body mechanics against them can give you a decided advantage. After three it would definitely be a hectic proposition as it becomes difficult to not allow an organized group of assailants to position one of them behind you. Any number of free shots will wear you down, they have the advantage if the fight goes more than a few minutes. Two minutes in a real fight is an eternity.

Lots of people say that pretty much all traditional martial arts(Karate, Kung Fu, Taekwondo, etc.) aren't very useful in an actual fight and that only Muay Thai, Brazilian Jujitsu, and boxing are what works.

That's pretty impressive have you ever been in any fights in the streets, or in a bar fight, what is your win loss ratio, and what would you say is the secret to winning a fight or common misconceptions about a fight?

I've heard wrestling is the best, because you are on the ground which is where most fights go.

I went with option 4, naturally. Fighting without use of weapons is a relic of the past - much like breastfeeding.

No, I do not know karate but I'm training in Shaolin Kung-Fu for 5 months now.

I'm obviously not a badass, kung fu takes time. :P But I've lost weight, I'm getting in shape and I believe I'd be able to defend myself against one opponent who has no training or same/less than mine.

I don't know how it'd increase the chance of getting hurt compared to most things.. Unless you mean it specifically lacks training in fighting multiple people at once.

Which.. Fair enough, I think you'd lose against multiple opponents but I think that is true for everyone regardless of their discipline.

Isn't that what the police are for?
To be fair I've had police self defense training when I worked for the DOC for 3 years. Other than that my training consisted of being in lots of fights when I was younger. MY fights are over quick usually. I was a wrestler and I tend to use stuff from that. I shoot a double and then when they are on the ground try and get into a mount and proceed to hit them in the face until they stop moving or I get pulled off. I have yet to lose via this method then again not many people know what to do when they get tackled and are on their back.

I know a variety of martial arts, including karate. I know some of Judo, Taekwondo, and military Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I've taken classes in Karate when I was younger in high school, black belt. I've also taken several womens' self defense courses that are taught to repel muggers/rapists and whatnot.

Full grown men usually avoid these situations. :P

Lol yeah I know what Karate is, it's a martial art often sold as the most bad ass fighting style but it is actually about dancing around with "Karate chops" & screaming (Kiai).

Karatekas like to think themselves as overpowered. When you ask them a fight to compare with actual fighting sports, they cower away saying that Karate is a mean of self defense, and when they get beaten the shit out of their ass they will say that they have been holding it because they fear their power might kill the assaulter.

I wonder how this dancing sport have gotten such bad ass reputation

And if you want to say that I know no shit about Karate, then I should tell you that I have been doing years of Karate before I got fed up (my father pressured me to practice when I was a kid), and my father and his friends are all black belt karatekas with at least third dan, and their master was a genuine japanese karate master who came from a japanese dojo.
Oh and My father was also a black belt taek won do "fighter" (he got insta black belt thanks to his background as a karate master)

So yeah I've been around enough in the business to know all about the paradoxe of the karateka which is the fact they are humble and that they deep down believe karate is so bad ass.

My knowledge of Krav and skills learned from muay thai have proven way more useful when my friends (who were viet vo dao, pancrace and boxing disciples, the pancrace one is a national level fighter, which help) when we were outnumberly assaulted by the vermines we call "racailles" here in France (we did not kick ass but we were fine when help arrived at 6+6 girls who didn't fight and one caused the incident, vs 15 older and bigger arabs/blacks thugs) Thanks for nothing, Karate

Forget Karate and go for MMA disciplines if you want to be able to defend your ass like Muay Thai or Pancrace.

Can hardly advise Krav though, as the only way to practice the actual thing is to roll in GIGN or French Marine Commando or being part of the JDL (young Jewish defense League). From the latter, I've seen they are the kind of cowards who would always use weapons in a fight like knives, chairs, tables, glass bottles, ...

If i where to learn anything it would be Krav Maga or something where you learn to handle knife/gun situations as that's becomming more common now days with the kids. Or you can just pepperspray them then beat the crap out of them
