"Every man is a potential rapist.": Lee Lakeman & The Vancover Rape Shelter

The Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter has stated in an article on its website that "Every man is a potential rapist." This was in defence of comments made by one of its long-standing employees and spokeswoman, Lee Lakeman.

Lakeman, a high profile feminist pioneer, activist, author, speaker and recipient of an honorary PhD from the University of British Columbia, stated the following when offering advice to men that would like to help: "Get your individual boot off the neck of the women in your life."

In its "statistics" section, Rape Relief's Web site defends Ms. Lakeman's public comments stating that "Every man is a potential rapist" and says female activists are stopping violence by, among other things, "refusing sex with men as long as they read pornography."

Isn't it more accurate to say that everyone is a potential rapist...? Also her comments imply that any guy with a woman is controling her life. That seems vastly sexist to me since she is just generalizing the other gender in a very jegative light.

I suppose it's technically correct as all creatures who can have sex could also potentially rape. It's not useful, and certainly no defense for advocating sexual subordination of men toward women rather than women toward men.

"Every man is a potential rapist" is certainly true, and women should be careful about getting drunk/taking drugs with strangers at parties, etc.

Implying that men who watch pornography are the likely rapists is ridiculous, however. This idiot lost all credibility with that statement.

"Stopping violence by refusing sex with men as long as they read pornography" - I disagree. Unless pornography is teaching men to have violent sex and/or sex without consent of the partner, it should remain a thing both men and women are free to watch (not read).

Not all men fit the profile of a rapist, just like not all women are sluts or whores. If these women are finding too many men that are "potential rapist" then they keep looking in the wrong place. Women take the responsibility of evading attack seriously. It is a difficult job. The dangerous men are not visibly identifiable, have no distinguishable traits, fit no particular group. We know they can be fathers, brothers, husbands, teachers, doctors. They can be small, large, rich, poor, black or white. The only thing they have in common is that they are men who rape and batter women.

To say that every man is a potential rapist is not to say that every man rapes. It is a caution against falsely categorizing men and taking unwitting risks as a result.

As patronizing as it sounds, I actually happen to agree. The thing is though that this doesn't apply to just men, which is why it comes across so poorly, nor does it apply to just rape. You never know if the person you talking to is secretly a psychopath that keeps little kids chained to the wall in his basement, so a general policy of not taking unwitting risks, isn't unreasonable. If you want to say every man is a potential rapist, fine, but that needs to be applied to women as well. Just because it happens with less frequency doesn't mean you disregard it.
