the issue is, if you're a weeb or a furry or some other internet fandomer, having your avatar set like that and wearing it proudly is basically an admittance of "if this was real i'd be trying to fuck it"
or you're just being edgy

Anime in general is fine.
However, when I see MLP avatars, it makes me fairly annoyed. Don't ask me why. People are welcome to like what they want, but something about it just grinds my gears.
Mostly because they have a particularly hilarious and fairly large subculture. I don't hate the avatars, but I will admit I can wonder how many that use them are part of said subculture.

I think anyone who defines their entire life around a single idea or hobby is pretty damn creepy and weird. Be it anime, sports, video games, or even things like religion or being a vegan. If you want to be really passionate about something like that, great, but don't run around wearing it like a fucking badge telling anyone who will listen and even most of those who won't about it.
Anime is just one of those things where there is a certain percentage of fans out there who go way too far with it where they start dropping random japanese words into their speech or buying and walking around with body pillows with nearly naked female characters on it them and it creeps people out and give the entire fandom a bad image.

I don't know if it's simply the tiny section I've seen but I've gotten the impression that Japanese writers are often a little more nihilistic (if that's the right word) with the storyline and characters, with very little qualms about killing off a prominent or rising character so as not to go too "Mary Sue" and basically keeping things moderately "realistic" in terms of poetic license. "If someone is facing insurmountable odds, then they won't surmount them no matter how heroically they fight" kinda thing, which appeals to me tbh sometimes the "good guys surviving all" gets a little tiresome (I used to support Shredder from TMNT cartoon as a kid).
I also get a feint impression that it rubs off on the people who saturate themselves in that media, and they tend to post in a more "edgy" manner as a result. Thats entirely conjecture on my part, but certainly there are some posters on this forum who shitpost the edgiest stuff and basically all of them have anime avatars*, so I find it very easy to dismiss them as "weabos living outside reality" (which is a fault on my part ).
*Notable exception: Derpkitteh
Different cultures have different ideas on story telling so that may be part of it. I know that Japanese people do seem to be more ok with having an open ending where as western audiences seem to get really mad if every little plot thread isn't wrapped up nicely by the end. But yeah, they may be more ok with killing off characters if it fits the narrative although that is changing some in the west as well with things like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead being really popular.
Can s/o please explain to me how one can have a "perverted" avatar/signature on MMO-C?
Last time I checked, mods were uber strict in terms of size and content of avatar / sigs.
Now stuff you see in the official ff-xiv forums on the other hand (esp HUGE gif signatures).... adblock save me!
I am indifferent. I don't associate anything with any of the images. They are just random cartoon images without meaning to me.

I've had at least one anime avatar. Cartoons = Anime = Comics = The Walking Dead/Marvel movies. So really, if they hate anime, they hate life.
I dunno... aren't you picking a fight with a strawman stereotype here?
I've never met anyone who obsessively speaks to his 2D anime waifu. Those people, if they exist, are mental patients. I've never met one of those. Even online. I know a guy who bought one of those body pillows that you talk about and left it very visible in his living room. It was deliberately playing the stereotype, he used it to fish for reactions. We all had a big laugh about it afterwards.
As far as the anime geeks I know, and I count myself amongst them, we won't talk to others about anime unless explicitly asked. I at least realize that most people just don't know anything about the topic, making any potential conversation about the latest most awesome developments of [insert show of the season here] or whatever completely one-sided and awkward.
I won't deny there are radicals out there who are in your face with their way of life - but even those tend to be stereotype characters, played up for effect, compared to what they really do.

Anime is garbage. I've hated it. I've always hated it.
I grew up watching Transformers Generation 1, G.I. Joe, the Real Ghost busters, Beast Wars, Batman the Animated Series, X-Men (on Fox Kids), assorted Nicktoons, and then years later because fuck growing up, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.
I've tried to get into anime. I've really tried. I've even tried to get into anime-style Transformers (Car Robots, Micron Legend) as kind of a bridge. I've tried the whole "If you like __________, you'll like Cowboy Bebop" or something. And I can't make myself like it. I think the animation is garbage compared to what was on western TV screens twenty years ago. I can't bring myself to care about the characters or stories. Even new cartoons like Transformers Prime hold my attention far more than any anime can.
Anime is just not for me whatsoever.
I don't know much about anime, but I know it is the best thing to watch in order to come to an informed opinion about US politics.
People can have what ever you want, i just wish people would stick with one avatar as that's how i tell who is talking as i don't tend to look at the name :S
Hell traskk has cartoon porn pics for his avatars :P
I love anime avatars.
What I don't get is the "Ahegao Hentai/Doujin" faces as profile pictures. They are kinda scary O__O
If I'm being honest and not just trying to be polite. I think anime is odd, and most people who watch it are odd. it's the same as my little pony.. it's grown ass people or late teens watching a kids cartoon. I don't get it. never have, never will.
it's the same as when somebody starts a sentence with 'I'm a feminist' or SJW, or BLM or whatever other hip acronym I've forgotten..
either way, it does make me pretty much think.. that person is a neckbeard weirdo.
Whilst I'm sure somebody will report me for this, It is not aimed or targeted at anyone. it's my opinion on anime and its fans etc.

I used to watch some anime shows when i was a kid. Don't have anything against anime-avatars per se but for me it's childish and no grown man or woman should watch anime.
Many animes deal with the trauma of the atomic bomb and it's after effects both on Japan and the psyche of the japanese. These are far from childish.
Anime is merely an art form, a vehicle to deliver stories and messages.
This would be one example:
