A homeless man from San Francisco will be awarded a six-figure reward for pointing police in the direction of three dangerous fugitives who escaped a Santa Ana prison in late January. Hossein Nayeri, Jonathan Tieu and Bac Duong were the subject of a statewide manhunt for just under a week before Matthew Hay-Chapman, who is homeless, spotted two of the men and their stolen white van in San Francisco. (The third had surrendered to police the day before.)
According to CBS Los Angeles, Hay-Chapman alerted local police, telling them he recognized the fugitives and their vehicle from the website The Drudge Report, leading to their arrest.
Yesterday, the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted to award Hay-Chapman $100,000 out of the $150,000 reward, said Jean Pasco, a county spokeswoman. The remaining $50,000 will be divided between the owner of the stolen van and two Target employees who spotted the fugitives on surveillance footage and called police.
