A pet peeve of mine is people who insist that certain pronunciations supersede others. If you know what the person is saying then drop it. Any particular language is made up of tons of dialects and vernacular. Then you have to account for ones own voice and vocal range. Critiquing someones pronunciation when its not an actual issue is just a way to make your meaningless life look better.

The oddest one for for me is Glaive. Mostly because I'm dyslexic, and the first time I read it, I saw "Glavie", so it sorta wedged in my mind as "Glah-Vee" instead of "Glayv". I have to stop/correct myself every time.

English doesn't have rules. French, Latin, Germanic, and more are all involved, plus whatever time and location did to it. Edit: And I'll add that when spellings were standardized, it didn't necessarily conform to every accent or dialect.

Not sure if this is an argument for or against the pronunciation of GIF as "jif."

It stands for graphics, so the natural tendency would be a hard 'g' sound, rather than a soft one.

It is easy if you are British.

Similarly Leicester Square often trips up tourists.

It's hard G, as the G is for Graphics, and it just makes sense.

Sometimes we just fuck with people, e.g. Gillingham in Kent and Gillingham in Dorset are pronounced differently, a soft 'g' for the former and hard for the latter.

My favourite is Trottiscliffe, pronounced troz-lee, just because.

Or if you're from Massachusetts. I think the biggest qualification to be a news anchor here is being able to pronounce Worcester. Damn you brits and your naming of towns that already exist.

The city in Texas is Hew-stun, the street in NYC is How-stun. Same spelling. Gotta love it.

Ok, how do you all pronounce the "GMO" acronym? Hard G or soft G?

Jee Em Oh. Genetically is a soft G. (Also, GMO is an initialism, not an acronym, and isn't meant to be said as a word.)

The New York way makes more sense to me, it is how I would pronounce it if I did not know it. Of course New York has a lot of British place names, so the naming conventions are similar.
