    Playable Sub-race Thread

The Problem: World of Warcraft offers very little in terms of character customization compared to other modern MMOs. Modern MMOs allow for many degrees of character customization, whereas World of Warcraft only offers customization of beards and skin colors.

The Warcraft Universe is rich and full of interesting characters, boasting dozens of demographics that are not currently represented in the game.

There are also a limited variety of playable physiques across the current roster of races. For example, all Humans are physically identical, despite the Human physique being very diverse.

The Solution: Instead of introducing a new race of bear people or birdmen every other expansion, introduce a number of sub-races based on existing races.

If Blizzard adds 2 sub-races representing a large and small physique variety, then Blizzard could kill 2 birds with 1 stone by adding sub-races that represented each physique type. For example, you could create a 'Light' Human Mage by choosing the Half-Elf Human sub-race. Alternatively, if you want to be the D3 Barbarian, you could choose the Barbarian sub-race type.

Most of the proposed sub-races in this proposal would work without retcons.

Originally calling themselves Druids of the Pack, they shapeshifted into a powerful yet unwieldy form that embodied the fury of the wolf Ancient Guardian, Goldrinn. They called this form the Pack Form, a form that turned them into wolves. Although powerful, the Pack Form tended to turn the druids feral. Malfurion Stormrage prohibited the use of this form because it couldn't be controlled. However, the Druids of the Pack continued to practice the form in secret, but eventually lost themselves to the form's feral rage. Lore: Half-ogres, whom the orcs call mok'nathal, are created in the rare unions of orcs and ogres. Orcs originally bred half-ogres to combine the power of an ogre with the intelligence and cunning of an orc. However, half-ogres proved to be more stubborn than either race, bearing a horrendous independent streak. Little could change a half-ogre's mind once set, so the project was scrapped. Shamanistic orcs honored half-ogres as noble and savage creatures of the land, but quickly the race dwindled, as few orcs would willingly breed with the gigantic ogres.

Recently, half-ogres reappeared in the world following the exploits of Rexxar, Champion of the Horde, the greatest Mok'nathal to ever live. While still rare, more and more half-ogres come out of the woods each day, trying to find a place to call their own.

Even in the presence of friends, a half-ogre is quiet and withdrawn, uncomfortable around creatures that talk back. A half-ogre would choose to be out hunting or exploring a new wilderness rather than take a drink at a bar.

I'm all for sub-races, or any extra customization options, really.

Hobgoblins are in the game, though, perhaps Gilgoblins would work better.

I've been wanting the option to make my Dwarf mage a Dark Iron for ages. I don't think it'd even take that much more work. A few grey skin tones and all red eyes.

Half Elves would be fairly easy too I imagine, you'd basically just put elf ears on humans, but let them have access to some anime hair colors ala that half elf disguise that dragon guy from the Sunwell manga/burning crusade uses. (I forget his name)
You must show no mercy, Nor have any belief whatsoever in how others judge you: For your greatness will silence them all!

I'd add to that they actually have a starting scenario rather than a zone, pretty much like artifact/class quests at the start of legion. Level they start at may vary per race.

    Some additions and alterations btw.

    1. Human - great choices, if I were to add a 3rd, it would be some sort of black or asian looking group. Barbarian hit the nail on the head as a sort of Azotha or half way between Vrykul and Human race.

2.Goblin; Gil-goblin I would definitely have as a 3rd or even the first option. Whiles goblins can be tinkers (half machine), that fits a gnome's fantasy a lot more - as goblins like their carnal pleasures too much. Like the take on hob-goblins

    3. Trolls: Zandalari trolls and Ice trolls are notble ommissions, if i were to go with 3 it'd probably be Zandalari, Forest and Ice - although Sand could give me something new as ICe trolls are just blue/hite colouring on Forest - but their advantage is they have an undead element to them that gels with teh forsaken

    4. Blood Elves: So many options here: Re-covering wretched (renamed Sun-touched) - they can feel the scrawnier rougher looking blood elf, unshaved, crooked eyebrows, tatooed, normal eyes, addict fantasy. - sunwell restoration along witht eh work of the preists has brought a lot of elves back to a level of sanity, some trying really hard to rehabilitate, otthers taking full advantage as crooks, or magic peddlers.
Naga-elf: appropriate if Azshara is in the next expansion. In an attempt to restore themselves to their full elven form permanently a powerful spell is cast, however the curse of the old gods proves trickeir to actually fully break and having the tethering to the well of eternity lost by it, their elven forms become a blood elf skin colouredwith some elemnts of the sea, exotic patches of coloured scale (think on parts of legs, on part of hands chest/ neck. Hair is coral textured and coloured too, eyes look normal except they are large with irises like hte various colours of the sea, and the pupils having whirlpools. (in water they fully transform into naga). If naga were playable, this could be an alternate form allowing them to mount up, and switch betwen the two at awill. They are blood elven sub-race because the high elves camefrom Zni'azshari too and Lady Vashj already allied with them in TFT (They can retain this form in combat because it's a unique form although cooldown power up metas can force naga form for their duration - if a sub-race there will be no naga form ofc, if naga are added later as a full race, that feature can be added to them

    5. Night Elves: Cenarions should be able to shapeshift to bi-pedal form to mount normal mounts and flying mounts, like worgen it's something they can do out of combat, as masters of shapeshifting, blizzard can have them eithe rnight elven in fuly in bi-pedal form or reatin things like leaf textured hairand grass/moss beardwooden claw, the legs could be goat like/fawn like instead of proper night elven.

    6. Forsaken: making the recently undead as Vampires would be a more exciting thing all around for them. In combat they can gain the vampire face morph similar to effectsin popular series like Twilight an dVampire DIary series or True Blood - eyes redden, they can claws on their hands and feet, andthe face contrts to produce fangs an a unique contortion.

    Still a great read.

I think each race can easily have 3.

Shoc, once again you impress me with your ideas and subrace enthusiasm. I really want more customization to be added to the game...it may even make me resub. I'm all for subraces. Maybe I'll post my own list in this thread soon.

    No.
Half High Elf is a half elf.. and i think they'd be a great as a sub race. Although you'd have a quad of races that look similar high/blood elf, alliance human, forsaken vampire (recently deceased) and half high/blood elf.

still with different faces, different postures and different gait's you can get a very good selection.

... God I wish this was an official announcement... It'd be 100% better than having "sliders" to "customize" characters... Fuck sliders, gief subraces and loads of them!

They are blood elven sub-race because the high elves camefrom Zni'azshari too and Lady Vashj already allied with them in TFT (They can retain this form in combat because it's a unique form although cooldown power up metas can force naga form for their duration - if a sub-race there will be no naga form ofc, if naga are added later as a full race, that feature can be added to them
the only appropriate sub-race for darkspear are the Revantusk (forest troll loyal to the horde)

the policy of the blood elves is to kill all the cannibals!! different colors of eyes is the best I think blue and gold are the most appropriate

golden eyes on the blood elves could work just like the draenei lightforged

    lightforged subrace for dranei

I don't like a lot of your picture choices. Any way. Eradar are Draenei there litteraly the same thing. Silver pine worgen would just be the same as the ones we have now there's no presedent for being only half cursed. Recently deceased are the undead we have now. Other then theses the rest could work other then mabye vykral as there there own race not a sub race.

Cool that this thread got brought back. I've actually iterated further on the ideas. Scrapping most of them since they were a stretch anyways, but I think this a much better line-up of subraces.

    Human - Half Elf
Dwarf - Earthen (Including Frostborn) (Dark Irons and Wildhammer can be added as features for normal Dwarves)
    Gnome - Mechagnome
Night Elf - High Elf (I'm sure this will enrage people: see Nozdormu)
    Draenei - Broken (Argus edition)
Worgen - Weredragon (see Blackhowl) - Example Concept Art

    Orc - Half Ogre
    Tauren - Taunka
    Troll - Forest Troll
Undead - Skeleton (Shout out to Divinity Original Sin: 2)
    Blood Elf - Darkfallen
Goblin - Hobgoblin (from WoW RPG)

Why would the earthen join the alliance though they have there own thing going on. And weredragon is a pretty bad idea and wouldn't make any sense for wargen. Night elf worgen are really the only idea that works for them.

I think Weredragons are less of a crazy idea than people would think, there's already a pack of Worgen that's been exposed to Black Dragonblood. We know that Dragonmen were once fielded by Blizzard as a playable race so it's not too nuts.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure dragon blood doesn't turn people into dragons and the worgen curse makes them immune to magic effects like undeath so it would probably do the same to being turned into a dragon thing unless the magic was super powerful which a random black dragon probably isn't.

I know there's no precedent for it, and yes I am filling in some gaps with headcanon here, but we know that Drakonids are not natural creations, Nefarian was believed to have experimented with Dragonblood to create powerful warriors. We know that the Worgen curse makes them immune to the Plague of Undeath, but we don't know if that extends to Dragonblood-based transformation. It's my theory that any Humanoid mortal that consumes Dragon blood could become Drakonid, not to mention the Dragonmen who are totally artificial creations. But I'm employing a good deal of 'rule of cool' here too.

the undead elves can be forsaken sub race.
I would imagine, if Darkfallen Elves rejoined the Horde, they would be canonically Forsaken under Sylvanas, despite sharing a skeleton with the Blood Elves.

that's a forsaken subrace! the blood elves must have their own subrace with their leaders loyal to quelthalas.

different eye colors is the most logical.
that there elves with golden eyes as seen in the art of lady liadrin would be something normal at least for the elves more devout to the light, in the game we always see blood elves with blue eyes although a small minority in each expancion

Give blood elf players what they want !! for years we have been asking for different colors of eyes

Different eye colors is a pretty weak excuse for sub-races. I would much prefer those to be added as class-specific customization options, eg. Blood Elf Priests and Paladins get access to golden eyes like Liadrin, for example. Same goes for Wildhammer option for Dwarf Shaman, Dark Iron for Dwarf Warlocks and Rogues, etc. I don't think inter-faction loyalties matter much, besides, we already have Blood Elf DKs that are tolerated by the Blood Elves, I don't see why Darkfallen are any different. Just because they are a Blood Elf Subrace doesn't mean that they have to be Blood Elves.

It's possible I guess but unlikely I'd think they would get night elf with a slightly different wolf form mabye new fur colours or something.
