Trump announces Japanese corporate giant is investing $50 billion in the U.S.

President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday that Japanese telecom and internet conglomerate SoftBank would invest $50 billion in the United States and create 50,000 new jobs, saying that the decision wouldn't have been made without Trump's election win.

Excellent news (And he is not even inaugerated as president yet! Underbudget and ahead of schedule indeed)

Isn't this the same deal being made a few years ago that had some issue getting traction because of regulations?

Back then it was to try to get Sprint and T-Mobile to merge. It was considered too large of a merger in the market and would have negative repercussions to the consumer (just like the recent Time-Warner/Comcast issue). Basically this is a play for the merger to happen again.

Yes of course. A $50Bn investment was worked out over lunch between Trump and a CEO. It really wasn't planned many months in advance. It really wasn't planned by finance guy's looking at ROI's, etc, either. It was worked out over lunch in a single hour.

The stupidity of those aboard the Trump train never ceases to amaze.

Trump announces the Sun will rise tomorrow. A millennium of darkness will finally be ended!

    From the Washington Post article:

Although Trump claimed credit for the investment, Roger Entner, an analyst at Recon Analytics, argued that much of the $50 billion may have already been destined for U.S. technology companies.

"I think it’s making hay out of something that was there already," said Entner. "In all likelihood, this comes out of the $100 billion fund. Considering the extremely large part that the U.S. has in the high-tech economy, [Son] would have probably invested something in the neighborhood anyway."
Once again, he is making claims for things he never did. Not one of his claims has held up to scrutiny...not one so far.

How many times does he have to lie before Trump supporters figure out that he lies far more often than he tells the truth?

Seriously Trump supporters, "Are you ever not going to fall for that?" - Loki

Before this potentially becomes a anti/pro trump train etc, and ignoring many factors, like planning etc, I think we can agree that this, on face value, is a good thing, yea?

That depends on if the end game is the Sprint/T-Mobile merger. That's a bad thing.

No, considering that again it is a gambit to try and initiate another telecoms merger.

Nationalise that shit or split them up again.

Honestly no, the endgame will clearly be the Sprint/T-mobile merger. When was the last time a telecom merger ended successfully to the benefit of the consumer? All this does is decrease competition which encourages a high price floor and they can put less capital to customer service (ie Time-Warner, Comcast, At&t, ect).

This was killed in 2014 because it was deemed to be too harmful to the consumer.

Can we not encourage corporate monopolies, thanks?

Depends on what they are actually doing. If its into new businesses and creates jobs, yes. If its just to buy out existing businesses and squeeze to make their money back then no.

FYI the claims that they will create xyz numbers of jobs is meaningless. Noone is ever going to check and noone is going to care in a weeks time.

There really is no good reason that mobile phones, internet, and healthcare AREN'T nationalized.

It's because apparently people want their government to mostly work in service of corporations rather than people.

There really doesn't need to be any reason to complain about things that have the name trump attached to them. Knee jerk reaction.
