The Witcher is getting a Netflix series

The Witcher Saga is being made into a Netflix series. Netflix will work with Polish production and visual effects studio Platige Image to bring Geralt of Rivia to your screen, and original author Andrzej Sapkowski will serve as a creative consultant.

The news comes via an announcement on Platige’s website, which describes the series as a drama, and confirms it will be in English.

“Andrzej Sapkowski has created a rich and memorable world, at once magical and familiar,” says Erik Barmack, Netflix’s VP for international series. “We couldn’t be more excited about bringing [it to] Netflix members around the world.”

Sapkowski seems much more excited for this project than he initially did for the Witcher games, saying: “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing.”

The series has some serious heft behind it, with The Expanse's Sean Daniel and Jason Brown on executive production duties, and Oscar nominee and BAFTA winner Tomek Baginski also on board.

    Mads Mikkelsen should play Geralt.

As a massive fan of Witcher 2 and 3 with the accompanying DLC (never played the first), I am intrigued to see how this goes.

Does anyone know if the games are a massive departure from the books in terms of plot?

TV series usually have shit CGI so it will be interesting to see how the handle all the monsters or if they focus more on the war and politics side of it

Actually I think the game start where the books end. Anyone who knows better feel free to correct me if I'm wrong

Really looking forward to the TV-show, and as said above, hope they go big, really big!

He could look like an older Geralt if made up properly, with a white wig. That's pretty much where the similarities end, though. Mikkelsen is great at playing cold, calculated characters, and even a bit sad, forlorn ones. Playing a character who gets quite emotional, angry, annoyed, a character who's in love, or has a crush, and all the things Geralt is, none of it is really up Mikkelsen's alley. Then there's that very unique voice and accent of his, which he can't change at all. Nothing like Geralt.

Much like with Hannibal, you wouldn't get Hannibal Lecter the way you remember and love him. You'd get a new, different version of the character. Same would go with Geralt; you'd get a completely new, different version of Geralt, who's nothing like the Geralt Witcher fans love.

I can bet you on this that they will ruin the charm of the game as they can never reach the level of the actual game. Not expecting much from this series, although Netflix is really good at this work, still not having much good vibes. Was reading the comments in a post and understood that may be they will come with the story line from the book, but not from the game. Let's see what goes now. FINGERS CROSSED!

I hope it will go big. There was an attempt* to film it and based on a movie TV series was made afterwards. Fan community agreed it never happened - this alone should hint you about quality of those productions. Tho TV series after massive complaint from fans was "re-evaluated" and made slightly better than movie. But just slightly. Netflix and Baginski with Sapkowski in team makes me think it may be Game of Thrones rival.

I wouldnt say at start it would suck or not. I would not be afraid about CGI since the Platige Image (The onwer is Tomek Baginski who was nominated for the oscar for the movie Cathedral https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msIjWthwWwI) studio is going to be behind the scenes.

Some of the Platige Image works

Soo there is hope . Id rather be afraid if they stay true to the books, but still Sapkowski will be a consultant for the series and we know he is a douche whent it comes to this so he will probably try to force what is in the books

They show plenty of emotion in the Game though. Eskel, Lambert and Geralt all sitting around laughing and drinking was one of the best parts of Witcher 3.

I can't really make out if it is live action or an animation series.
The Tweet suggests its animation, because Platige Image is an animation company....

I'm sure it's gonna be every bit as camp and "gritty" as the games are.

It all depends on the budget. Just look at GoT and American Gods.
But your duty to Azeroth is not yet complete. More is demanded of you... a price the living cannot pay.

Can't wait to see Triss naked. Thanks Netflix.

We will never get an Elric series...

    *sigh*

    The games are not canon.
“A man will contend for a false faith stronger than he will a true one,” he observes. “The truth defends itself, but a falsehood must be defended by its adherents: first to prove it to themselves and secondly, that they may appear right in the estimation of their friends.”

    I'd root for Viggo Mortensen.

Well, I wasn't specifically referring to facial expressions. Mikkelsen's acting is just way too chill and reserved even when he's supposedly being emotional. And, there'd still be the problem of his voice and accent.

It's not like the bar is set that high.
