Barrens? Really? Before Cataclysm it was stupidly big and empty waste of landmass like and most of Kalimdor zones. Cataclysm Barrens one of the best redesigned zones. IMHO ofcourse.

The Barrens was just that: a barren wasteland. Perhaps not as desolate as, let's say, the Desolace (lawl) but it served it's purpose as a large zone with many different story lines going on.

Duskwood, Stranglethorn, Badlands, Western Plaguelands, Wetlands, Desolace, Feralas, Un'goro Crater, Winterspring, Elwynn Forest, Silverpine Forest, Dun Morogh and Swamp of Sorrows.

It depends upon the zone, e.g. most of the zones were turned into theme parks with linear progression (barf), but some of the zones received a needed update (Desolace).
