I didn't stutter. Spielberg was heavily involved in A New Hope and Empire, taking a back seat in Jedi. It showed.
OMG 13:37 - Then Jesus said to His disciples, "Cleave unto me, and I shall grant to thee the blessing of eternal salvation."
And His disciples said unto Him, "Can we get Kings instead?"
While a fair point, they looked incredibly boring on screen in comparison to the fights in the prequel trilogy. Also, this is a fantasy world with space magic and preternatural reflexes and whatnot in play, a certain level of over the top flare is expected, not mundane fights.
Well, he's the only hope Star Wars movie franchise has at the moment. The shit Rian did should just be explained by "it was all a dream" or some bullshit. Who allowed that idiot in the director's chair has clearly no idea what Star Wars lore is.
He didn't helm any Star Wars film and as far as I can tell was not heavily involved in the first two.
George Lucas had a lot of collaborators on the first two films that contributed in various ways to their unique character. Spielberg wasn't one of them.

The prequel trilogy fights look like awkward, heavily staged wire-and-bluescreen relics from the early 2000s, even before you get to the bad CGI. They're badly dated already.
Star Wars isn't real life though. Jedi and Sith are individuals with incredible reflexes, agility and combat ability in due part to being force sensitive. If I wanted realistic I'd watch Olympic fencing, with you know, humans that aren't force sensitive with any particular gifts other than their own natural abilities. Don't ever compare anything real with a fantasy world, it just looks silly.
Personally I loved the fight sequences post Return of the Jedi. It showed a lot more of what the Jedi and Sith could do

How can people hate the lightsaber fights of the prequels? They are awesome. They are jedi and sith, at their peak, they are supposed to be over the top. And it makes a lot of sense that the lightsaber battle between Luke and Vader is a bit more brutal and less refined, Luke is not a jedi trained in lightsaber battle since childhood. And Vader is getting old and is in a robot suit, so his movement is limited. I personally think the best fights are Luke vs Vader in Return, Darth Maul fights in Phantom and Anakin vs Obi wan, that last one definitively being the most over the top fight, but damn it is cool and intense.
I am pretty good with J. J coming back. Force Awakens was miles better than Last Jedi... Even though I still think Rey should've gotten her ass kicked by Kylo and get saved by the earth cracking. Why does she never lose a fight? She should at least lose a hand! I hope J. J retcons the last Jedi. Maybe the whole film was Finn dreaming in his comatose, that would be great.
The most unforgivable thing was the treatment that Luke Skywalker got.
They could explain that Luke's Force projection was so powerful that it physically teleported him to some random place. Or something. Even the most ridiculous fix to reverse it would be better than that movie's current bullshit ending.
Loving the prequel fights is like saying you love watching a painter hang drywall. No matter how expert a painter he is, it's boring, shitty, meaningless shitwork. He can paint Guernica on it afterwards, and that's, yanno, like character, and motivation, and a plot that makes sense, but the technical prowess of creating the backdrop means nothing.
Star Wars franchise is dead, and there is no way to revive it. It was looking fresh in 1970s, but it has been 50 years since. It's esthetics and mechanics look dated, and it cannot impress anymore. The only way forward is a complete reboot, but no one will risk that because of the mass of the men who still wastes money on their childhood fantasy and all the paraphernalia. For the new generation, there is nothing to relate with in that franchise, and a new old director won't fix that.

Any trash Chinese movie has better fights than those. Flashy swordplay is completely undeveloped in the West.
People also didnt have the force in real life. The duel of fates is entirely realistic when you take into the precog ability of all 3 combantants. They know where thier blades are, will be and thier allies or enemies. They are not fighting traditional with metal swords, they are fighting with swords of light. While being able to enhance abilities with force energy, pushs and jumps.

They did a full reboot. Starwars was alive and well then disney bought it and is turning it into a marketing franchise.
I'll agree with that. The group fights were not as good as the one on one fights.

And the fights from the original trilogy look like slow, play fighting with stick swords with no feeling of danger to me. Dated or not, they looked better and were more entertaining on screen.
After the last one I'll give this a pass. I was never much into star wars to begin with but the last one was just all over the place with its plot
That fight was fucking amazing. The one thing im truly grateful for with the prequels is that we got the clone wars, which had a bunch of really good fights. If anything, flush episode 9 like the rehashed turd its going to be and do clone wars seasons 7 and 8 instead.
