I got a better idea for an improved alternate timeline: The 60s never happened.

When I played, and now we're talking Quake 2 and similar a few years before Halo, the groups always encompassed just as many "jocks" as "nerds", if not more of the former, and usually a decent amount of girls that were otherwise rather uninterested in computers as well. I get what you are aiming at, and to an extent I certainly agree, but things we're also far from that black and white in practice.

Also, I'm not saying Halo didn't change anything - what I most definitely does not agree with, is the statement that without Halo, things would have remained as they were. Not a chance. Things were already set in motion - had Halo not come around, some other game would eventually have taken it's place, and accomplished if not the same, then similar things. Halo or bust just isn't realistic, at all.
The nerd label for the most part hasn't ever really meant anything outside of the movies.

However I still strongly contend that Halo was the game that really destroyed cliques and opened up American gaming bigger than it ever was before.

Anyway, I'm not saying it was totally clear cut but without Halo LAN parties would have been limited to just PCs, which as an entire platform were kind of on the way out until well, WoW dropped.

Remove HALO from the gaming sphere of the time then that leaves a big gap, just think HALO is the progenitor of the multiplayer console FPS. Without it being a success we wouldn't have Battlefield, Rainbow 6, Battlefront and possibly not even Overwatch.

Or imagine if HALO had dropped as the RTS for Macs it was first positioned as?

I don't even like the game (FPS games give me headaches and motion sickness unless it has like a cockpit UI.) But it's most definitely a keystone game that drove people to take a chance on a console that otherwise may not have survived given that each new console is sold below cost for months.

I think we are living in an alternative timeline right now.
