I don't think anyone could have predicted someone like Trump taking power.

As for the latter bit, it's a mixture of a few things.

1. Congress giving more and more military authority to the executive branch as they don't want the responsibility of dealing with consequences.

2. Literally it never being considered that a president would want to have an authoritarian military parade akin to what we see in NK/China/Russia, because that wasn't even a concept at the time.

They were (arguably) great men, but they can't see into the future.

The Pentagon said it was too costly and the city council fought against it. It wasn't canceled by the Pentagon, but the optics were so bad for the administration they caved on it (thankfully).

One person doesn't have so much power. Congress has a lot of power to block him from doing shit like this. The Founding Fathers just never assumed Congress would outright refuse to exercise their powers of oversight over a corrupt leader.

Besides the irony of using the military to celebrate someone who was never in the military, and the millions of dollars this will cost, this really isn't respectful to people in the service. If you have never served in the military it may not be apparent but no one enjoys these things. There will be countless hours spent practicing marches, constant details and inspections, then having to travel to another location, eat and sleep somewhere else. Day of the event will require even more inspections to make sure everything is perfect, they probably won't have an actual meal besides an MRE because they have to show up early around 4AM for collecting weapons, then getting to formation and having a pre-inspection by 8AM then another inspection by 9am which will all together take about 5 hours with nothing really happening. Then there is the standing out in uniform in the heat for hours.

These people should be enjoying the 4th of July celebrations with their friends and family, not in a parade.

The Trump administration wants to scale back a program that protects undocumented family members of active-duty troops from being deported, according to attorneys familiar with those plans.

The attorneys are racing to submit applications for what is known as parole in place after hearing from the wives and loved ones of deployed soldiers who have been told that option is "being terminated."

The protections will only be available under rare circumstances, the lawyers said they've been told.

"It's going to create chaos in the military," said Margaret Stock, an immigration attorney who represents recruits and veterans in deportation proceedings. "The troops can't concentrate on their military jobs when they're worried about their family members being deported."
