Sure I mean, if you want to annihilate the economy in 30 seconds by shutting down two of the top 10 economies in the world. 7th for California and 10th for Texas.

Yeah have fun with that. 3 weeks minimum of no shipping, no production, no oil, no income no government services. What, you think Americans are going to just sit down and quietly behave while they run out of food? When their power goes out?

You'd have to turn the military on them and then hooo boy!

I mean, personally I'd love to see Trump's presidency go down in flames, but this would most likely be literal flames.

This will make them actually start doing stuff - fear is a nice thing sometimes.
Not really convinced, since the belief seems to be summer warmth = Corona disappears, and everything is fine and dandy.

Officials in Washington state on Saturday announced the first death in the United States from the coronavirus.

"Washington" so, I suspect this is the guy we learned about overnight, one of the two new guys with unknown source.

    Shit.

I mean...so far, this isn't that far from the known mortality rate. This is not reason to panic. It is, however, a reason to stop handwaving this.

    Offff if this is true

Officials on Saturday announced a possible outbreak of coronavirus at a nursing facility in Washington State, a serious situation given the risks the virus poses to elderly people.

The possible outbreak is at a long-term care facility in Kirkland, Wash., called Life Care Center, officials from Washington state and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on a media call Saturday.

There are two presumptive positives associated with the facility, one a health care worker and the other a woman in her 70s.

Adding to the concern, officials said approximately 27 of 108 residents and 25 of 180 staff have some symptoms and are being tested.

Capitalism really only works so long as the masses don't catch on that capitalism really only benefits a handful of elites who profit off the masses hard work.

I don't get why anyone is "hoping" that warm weather will fix this all up. We have medicine. We have doctors. We have procedures. Hoping for the weather to fix it you might as well be wishing on a star, or checking your horoscope!

right, let me know how it works out when a state with a gun culture so ingrained that there is a gun"show" (its a damn swapmeet, not show but I digress) ever other week has "freedom of movement" stopped

Waco will look like a happy memory by comparison

there is a cost when you have a party that for DECADES spreads the idea that the government is always an enemy, that things like FEMA are fronts to take over for dictatorship

and that mess doesnt turn off just because the guy you like happened to get elected

and that "stupidity" you claim to hate so much, its what got and keeps Trump in office, and the GOP is happy to leverage every chance they get.

Just wait till the govt has to actually have FEMA do something to anyone but "brown" people.
Somehow this will be all blamed back to deep state Obama long term planning to overthrow Trump!!

Though they actually started using the "FEMA camps" to lock people up and republicans did not bat an eye...so.....

But we do not know if that will be the case. Virus is not yet understood enough, it is just a guess (though with a basis) that warmer weather will help.

A nursing home? Jesus. Hopefully it's not as bad as it sounds.

Its going to be far far worse than that.

Imagine China but without the authoritarian systems of control to halt the spread, plus having half of its population being deeply paranoid of government and armed to the teeth.

Also with a work culture that actively discourages sick days for people in low-income brackets due to both not being able to afford time off and being able to afford seeing an actual doctor.

I don't want this to be true.

But...if 25 nursing home staff are infected (we don't know that yet, but there are 25 with symptoms) and we didn't know until it was 24 hours too late, then it's got to be in the hundreds.

Hopefully the population's mix of actual knowledge of such things, to caution, to panic, slows this to a crawl.

The real danger is still the economic impact, and again, there's very little the US can do to magically make every other country better so they keep buying our exports and keep sending us imports. The experts have been saying a vaccine is a year away, but if it happened tomorrow it doesn't change last week.

I think part of the problem is, the person who is in charge sure sounded like hoping was his entire strategy, based on his public words and actions. At least, until recently, when he tried to distance himself from it by giving it to Pence.

As such, when someone who supports that person in charge (ahem) says something about hoping, and nothing else, the quite frankly logical interpretation is they're suggesting the same thing. Especially considering what a lot of Trump supporters are saying.

Did you personally say "it's just one person, we'll be fine"? No. Is @Sunseeker following a logical chain of events, even if you weren't directly involved? Yes. Hoping it will get better is fine, as long as you also encourage medical research, intelligent caution, and sanitation.

Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition.

You know, I tried that? The response was "who cares what you said" So, sorry, the colleagues you've chosen to surround yourself with have invalidated that approach.

Sorry. I don't make the rules. I just see to it they're enforced. But hey, keep trying to handle the issues logically. Maybe you'll stand out from the rabid fanbase and serve as the exception? It'd be a welcome change, honestly.

On topic: it might be in Illinois now.

The Illinois Department of Public Health and the Cook County Department of Public Health confirmed to The Hill on Saturday that the patient’s tests resulted in “presumptive positives” and will need to be confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The patient is hospitalized in isolation and is being treated in compliance with CDC protocols. Public health officials are seeking people who were in contact with the patient to reduce the possible spread.
Hopefully it's a false positive, because if it somehow made the jump from the West Coast to the Midwest, it could be basically anywhere in between too.

    Okay, this is fascinating:

Those are before and after pictures by NASA. China has shut down so many factories, the change in pollution is visible from space.

This is the first time I have seen such a dramatic drop-off over such a wide area for a specific event
