The market knows he lied. The DOW didn't leap up in excitement about a new signed deal. It got back some of the points they lost the previous week.

People who make their living investing and buying stock should be expected to be pretty good at it. The lukewarm response you got was evidence of this. By contrast, the DOW tanking when China and Trump officially announced policy, they reacted to that as expected.

Exactly this and more so in the direction in which investors are moving to further protect themselves when the net recession hits.

Trump says in public, as part of the ongoing Afghanistan situation, he will drop the troop level to 8,600.

"Yeah! He's bringing the troops home! MAGA!"

Which is 200 more than when he took office.

Yeah, people forgot that Trump sent a bunch more troops to Afghanistan in 2017 and raised the troop count there to 14,000. Drawing that number down to the level he inherited is not bringing the troops home. It's a broken promise.

Oh I'm sure it's a madhouse of ugly in the Taliban's home turf. I'm just pointing out yet another promise broken. If he promised it, and didn't provide it, then he broke his promise. You can say he needed to do it, but then, maybe he shouldn't have promised it? And maybe, when he promises it again ("Trump 2020: This Time, He Means It! How's The Black Eye?" is the current working slogan being sewn into Chinese-made flags) it won't be believed quite so readily.

If he actually does this, which I rather doubt, it is actually worse then that. Trump didn't raise the Troop cap in Afghanistan to 14,000, what he did is tell the Pentagon to set troop levels to what was appropriate for the mission that they were tasked with. This was actually a fantastic thing to do, and it was very necessary, as the struggle under arbitrary caps Obama put in place was real. With this announcement Trump seems to be in favor of reinstating the completely arbitrary troop caps we had before.

I went to Afghanistan twice under these troop caps, and I was in Afghanistan when Trump was elected, which was the low water mark for troop levels. The struggle soldiers have to go through to do that is insane. I had over 100 fully qualified soldiers back in the US that were just itching to come over, but I couldn't bring them because I had an arbitrary limit on my unit numbers deployed. Instead I was forced to run Soldiers into the ground trying to fill 2 or 3 jobs. Our S1 clerk (Basically the HR guy) was also our only H8 qualified guy, which meant he was also the wrecker driver and operator for any sort of combat recoveries. So we worked the poor kid like a dog doing HR work, which he wasn't trained to do, and then hauled him out of bed and sent him on 10 hour recovery missions at least twice a week. It sucked, but there was no other option, because I couldn't bring any of the many qualified HR specialists or H8s I had sitting on their butts back in Kentucky. I personally replaced 4 different people when I arrived, two of which outranked me.

That is the sort of stupidity that arbitrary troop numbers cause. If we want to decrease Troop numbers we have to decrease what we are asking them to do, but we never do that. And as the situation gets worse and worse, and the Taliban takes more districts, we keep asking them to fill in for the Afghans more, not less.

The Times reported that Westerhout was immediately labeled a "separated employee" and would not be allowed to return to the White House on Friday after Trump reportedly learned of her alleged conversation with journalists.
