I agree with this statement.
However, if you have a residual WoW gold income, and you have nothing to spend your gold on, why not get a few months of game time free? Which is what I do. I don't go out and specifically farm gold. Thats boring and pointless (for me because I have a good paying job). But, every few months, I notice that my total server gold is several hundreds of thousands of gold higher than it was a couple months ago, and I buy wow tokens, because why not?
I take my wife out to a great steak dinner with the money I saved. Win - Win.
Much easier to earn 15 dollars then 200+ k gold but im glad it helps some ppl.
Haven't spent a dollar on WoW (besides Legion, won't pay $ for BfA obviously) since they released and were a measly 25k, and have paid for 100+ HS packs every expac since Mean Streets because of tokens. Easily the best thing introduced. I work and make plenty to pay the sub but it's a good feeling self-sustaining through the game. (and not having to pay for overpriced HS packs)
There is no way people can earn 200k in under half an hour. Just. Not. Possible.
I don't care what people keep on insisting, it just isn't possible.
People frequently confuse 'receive 200k' with 'earn 200k'.
I can 'receive 1 million gold' in 5 minutes, but it takes WAY longer to get all the stuff together and do the actual 'earning'.
Challenge Mode : Play WoW like my disability has me play:
You will need two people, Brian MUST use the mouse for movement/looking and John MUST use the keyboard for casting, attacking, healing etc.
Briand and John share the same goal, same intentions - but they can't talk to each other, however they can react to each other's in game activities.
Now see how far Brian and John get in WoW.
I never felt the urge to buy a wow token. I earn $15 in far less time than I would earn the corresponding gold in game. I could easily go out of my way to make sure I earned that gold but it wouldn't be fun playing that way so I don't really see the point.
I buy Tokens only for Battle.net Balance. Since I already have gold just flowing in anyway and $15 for a sub is nothing to me, at least I can use the GOld I make in game to buy other Blizzard stuff.
I'm still making more then enough gold just by semi regular playing to cover subscription, so yeah.. ts nice to have an option of token. that and y accumulated stash of gold paid for Destiny 2, and both Star craft 2 battlechest and original starcraft remaster, so... /shrug. its been edging closer to the point where I no longer get enough gold just from playing, but so far, it hasn't gone over it yet.

I think I've paid cash maybe 3-4 times since the start of the tokens.
The game throws so much gold at you if you play just a little bit. If you struck while the iron was hot in WoD you would have made several million gold easily. I really don't see how people even casually play and don't have piles of gold. As far as saving money with the token I have paid for the last few years of game time for myself, my gf and my brother in law on top of buying other games and having time pre paid for 1 to 3 years for each account. I have also bought a random 1 to 3 months of time for other friends along the way. Collectively I have saved over $2000, not a big amount of money, nice to put that in my nephews college funds rather then give it to Blizzard.

There are so many low effort to zero effort ways to make money from the game. It is amazing that anybody that plays doesn't have a million or more gold just from passively playing. Sure there are some extreme oddities like getting a raid boe worth 500k or more, but if you raid that does happen at least once a tier. Sure it is harder to pay with game time now since it cost so much more gold, but there was a time when you could have easily had 2 years of time banked for 17 to 21k a token.
