The story is pretty simple. The lawyer was told he was going to take the fall for this scandal. Trump is probably paying him far more than $130,000 to be on retainer. Trump probably hinted that the lawyer would no longer be employed if he didn't take the fall. Therefore the money will lead back to the lawyer and Trump will look clean.

If I wanted to spend money on something sketchy like drugs or hookers, but I didn't want the money to lead back to me, I'd have someone work for me in a legitimate position who purchased the sketchy stuff with their own funds. I'd just pay them a rediculous salary to keep quiet/take the fall if shit got leaked.

Interesting thought, but I don't buy that. Trump has better than average lawyers wandering around, and I'm pretty sure they're smart enough to know that, if your personal lawyer pays hush money to a porn star who says she slept with you, it does nothing to help the court of public opinion.

Other than Trump's rabid fanbase, who swallow whatever Trump shoves down their throat regardless of facts or evidence, nobody is going to believe the lawyer kept everything from Trump, and more importantly, aren't going to believe Trump would keep a lawyer who would pay over $100k of his own money to protect Trump's reputation from a blatant lie.
