The Japanese culture as a whole* (asterisk because you simply cannot generalize an entire culture) is actually rather accepting of people from other cultures embracing their own. That said, anime and the like is not traditional Japanese culture - even though anime and manga are bigger in Japan than cartoons and comics are in the west. They generally don't accept it as part of their ethnic culture. It's basically akin to saying country music is American culture.
