If you would have lived in 1940s Germany, would you be a nazi? Or you would try to escape the regime by smuggling yourself out, with associated risks and financial problems?
Would you protest the regime, would you just go by the wind?

Assume you wouldnt know the outcome of the war or the outcome of anything.

I don't really get what the question has to do with "liberals", but I'm fairly confident that I would have been essentially the fascist version of Havel's greengrocer:

I'm not sure why the OP is just calling out the liberals. In reality, most people went right along with the Nazi regime, and deluded themselves into believing it was the proper course. Liberals can be authoritarian asshats, just like conservatives can be.

It's really fascinating how Americans define the term "liberal" to define a set of human characteristics that they perceive.

Having worked there for years, my sense is that it's related to the binary nature of the political system and how it polarizes the population into extremes. Most older countries that I've been to tend to view things on a scale that is largely gray and can vary over the years.
