Why? Because its made up holiday to sell you crap.
Don't sweat the details!!!
My personal best was my ex buying this mega swanky top floor suite on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago, fancy dinner, dancing, then cuddling and him telling me he loved me for the first time.
Personal worst was when I broke up with a guy I was dating because he said he didn't celebrate Valentine's Day and tried to pull the "we're just friends" card. He later tried begging to have me back, saying he got "nervous" and "freaked out", literally showing up crying on my doorstep...I told him it didn't matter because he should want to spend time with me/take one for the team because I already did that with the shit he cared about but I didn't. Also I was really offended he tried downgrading me to "friend" status even though we were clearly dating and had been for several months at that point. We did end up making amends and while overall it was not a terrible relationship and we are still friendly it was not a good fit for me, even if I agree that Valentine's Day is a lot of commercial garbage.
Ideal world best: Vacation somewhere private with a lot of natural beauty. Doesn't really matter where as long as the air is clean and the sun is shining and there's a view of the mountains/ocean. And my dog is there too.

Just tell them that you're one of his boyfriends.
Aww, that's an awesome one. Especially if it's from a awesome hotel room with a sweet view of the skyline of Chicago. 10/10
Yeah, certainly one of those tricky ones for sure, I don't think I ever made it unclear where I stood on my emotions with a girl, and that whole well Valentine's Day is just commercial whatever is just an excuse.
Either for doing something nice for someone you love, or making it clear they aren't worth the effort otherwise. The Truth is all holidays are commercialised, I don't think it is a matter of how deep your pocket books have to be, but more about how much room is in your mind to have an excuse to do something nice for someone you could care the most for in this world.
But yeah a Vacation would be nice, but I think in terms of doing something big, I would maybe make plans for a trip by some tickets have a nice dinner and surprise them, sometimes if you have a birthday right after, show them the tickets on Valentines day, then plan for their birthday maybe.
As for Tom Cruise, I'll ask my girlfriend about that, just kidding. My friend bought his wife one of those platinum Scientology crosses though. I think it was some platinum deal around $4,000.
I would think something like that on Valentines day could be the worst no matter who you were.

Best: Pretending the holiday doesn't exist. We did it this year and it's been wonderful.

Best gift: Chocolate!
Worst gift: Chocolate. D:
Alternative worst gift: One-sided forgetting (deliberate or not) the day exists. D:
Oh shut up with this "its too commercial" bull shit .. the best gifts come from the heart. There is nothing wrong with having a day you can celebrate with the person you love...
I think the best gifts come from you and mean something, Whether its expensive or not doesn't matter as long as you know it will make her happy.
