I think I might've played the Alpha, but I'm a bit unsure. I definitely played the Beta though, so that's my option.

Whoa, eerie, that's almost exactly what I did.
I wasn't allowed to play WoW because there were demons in it (Bible thumper household) So I made my case for CoH instead and secretly played Classic on a friends account. Wore my folks down enough to get my own account when BC came out (even though it had more demons in it.)
Spring of ‘06...
Would have liked to start earlier, but I was a broke teenager. Didn’t have the comp or funds for the monthly sub, but I feel like I joined at a great time nonetheless. I was able to experience Vanilla leveling all the way to 60, made some good friends, and had enough time to really get hyped up for the expansion.
Stoneskin, Mana Spring, Wrath of Air, Totem of Wrath...
I started in 2013, it's great
Between TBC and Wrath.

Vanilla and its been a fun ride.
looking at the poll, it seems we're mostly oldies but goldies here
I'd like to say spring 2006? I don't remember exactly, but I do remember Ahn'Qiraj coming.
I started playing shortly after Dire Maul released.
November 20, 2008 (start of Wrath)
Yesterday.
When I was younger I used to hope bad things wouldn't happen.
Now I just hope they're at least funny when they do.
When the war effort was on. Played severals months on private server before that tho.
I started a bit after The Burning Crusade launch, and have always felt like I've missed a lot because of not having played Vanilla.
Seriously, there are so many legendary stories about people camping some herbs in Felwood, PVP'ing at dragon world bosses or running around the world getting buffs. Nothing that came after that just feels like anything.
Do you have "the" story from Vanilla that you always somehow end up telling everyone?
