Dragon Quest XI is coming to the PS4 and Steam on September 4th 2018

    http://www.ign.com/articles/2018/03/...no-3ds-version

It sucks that the switch version is coming later but I was secretly hoping for a PC version of the game and will get that one for sure!

Its finally nice knowing that the US release is coming now.

    Press release:

LOS ANGELES (March 28, 2018) – One of the most revered role-playing game franchises of all time returns to the West with DRAGON QUEST® XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age™ coming to the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system and STEAM® on September 4.

DRAGON QUEST XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age tells a captivating tale of a hunted hero and is the long-awaited role-playing game from series creator Yuji Horii, character designer Akira Toriyama, and series composer Koichi Sugiyama. As the eleventh mainline entry in the critically acclaimed series, DRAGON QUEST XI is a completely standalone experience that features entirely new characters, a beautifully detailed world, finely tuned turn-based combat, and an immersive story that will appeal to longtime fans and franchise newcomers alike. After its release in Japan, DRAGON QUEST XI won multiple gaming awards and received critical praise, including PlayStation’s Platinum Prize and a perfect 40/40 score from Famitsu (Japanese publication).

In addition to delivering over 100 hours of content, the Western release of DRAGON QUEST XI will also feature several upgrades and enhancements that were not included in the Japanese release, including:

    English Voiceover
Draconian Quest, a hard mode that offers additional challenges for more experienced players.
Overhauled Menus & UI, with graphical enhancements and more intuitive navigation.
Camera Mode, allowing players to take in views of the beautiful landscape, character renders and ferocious monsters in detail.
A New Dash Function and many other system enhancements such as improved character and camera movement

Beginning today, adventurers who pre-order from the PlayStation®Store can treat themselves to the exclusive “The Legend Reborn” Theme as an instant reward, along with in-game DLC items when the game launches – check out the following link for more details.

The Switch version seems to be being built from the ground up which is why it's coming later.

Also, sucks to be a 3DS Dragon Quest fan in the west.

I would rather have pass on english voice acting and get the game sooner. Damn casuals they ruin everything !

According to Producer Hokuto Okamuto, the localization will be more like a remaster than a mere update.

Good, I love Dragon Quest and am happy to see that they're making more effort to potentially captivate people in the West. DQ8 was a pretty big hit when it came out, I'd love to see how this new one works considering it'll be the first major installment on a console for that series since then.

Pretty sure there will be an option to use Japanese voices just like there is in literally every other recent JRPG.

Bad translation. It's not a "remaster" it's just the newer version of UE4 that can give you a slight performance boost but does take a lot more effort to transition to then a mere localization.

For example Tekken 7 did this, exact same game they where just able to reduce the input lag by about 3 frames. No graphical enhancements at all.

For DQXI it might get the game to native 1080p on base PS4 as it was 900p in JP version but I wouldn't count on that even.

Japanese version doesn't have any voice acting, the developers say it's because of the different mannerisms and emotions a word carries in Japanese. They prefer their audience to make their own mind up. Essentially, we English folk are silly and lack imagination.

Alts: Rogue, Druid and Paladin plus many, many more.

There is no voice acting in the JP version...

It's mute like every DQ game is. The english version of 8 was the only DQ game to have VA before the english version of this will.

I think it's more so good VAing is expensive as fuck to license in Japan and an even bigger nightmare if you have to license it out to other regions. Japan is more open to there not being voice acting as they can read kanji faster then we can read the alphabet so they can get away with it.

In the west, no VAing is a huge turn off and they can also hire cheaper(and possibly bad) VA without as many issues.

I guess that is one way to look at cultural differences. I prefer to stick with "lets not just be a dick about it" when it comes to these things though.

It's a bit of both along with the fact that they apparently didn't do too much fine tuning of the script until the later stages of development. This is the quote from an article I was reading about it not too long ago.

"If they went with the voice acting option, Square Enix says that it would’ve taken a lot longer to record all the voices, and that would’ve also meant that the script would’ve needed to be completed earlier. Additionally, it would’ve made things difficult to make any changes later on in the development.

Series creator Yuji Horii also had a focus on wanting to see through the story until the very end. He also did a lot of fine-tuning details of the script until the very very end. With the significance of this in mind, they decided to not include any voice acting into Dragon Quest XI.

The interview also mentions some talk from Horii about the protagonist’s emotional display. Since the protagonist is basically the player, Horii made the instruction to avoid showing expressions such as “anger” as much as possible. When the protagonist actually does get mad, you’ll see it in his body language and also in the movement of his eyes.
    "

Excellent, I was beginning to wonder if people cared for the game or not.

I just upgraded to a decent 4k monitor (Acer deal that was on sale earlier this week) so I can play this and Ni No Kuni II in full glory.

Why? We have gotten most of the games aside from the Monsters games. I was annoyed that it requires a translation patch and hacks in order to play the remake of Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland, but it was worth it. I guess we didn't get 10 or 11 in the west which is equally annoying. It really bugs me how inconsistent Square Enix is with their releases here, I have loved these games since I was a kid and it baffles me that they don't localize every game.

It's times like these I wish I knew how to read Japanese...

Does suck there's no 3DS version, and I'm not waiting forever for a Switch version just for portability, so will be Steam version for me I suppose. Though juggling this and being a month into BFA right around when raids will be starting will be kind of a bitch (this is assuming Blizz are asshats still and delay initial raid openings again).

Also agreeing the lack of DQM games really sucks too.

Dragon Quest XI for Switch is taking it's sweet time because the version of UE4 the game was originally built in is too outdated to run on the Switch.

Also, a western release of the Switch version is still planned and they originally were going to delay the PS4 western version to match the Switch version, but decided against that.

In the end, that might be the reason for it not being out in Japan but they already ported the game to the new UE4 as they already claimed for the western release on PS4/PC.

The truth is they prioritized the PC version over the Switch one because Nintendo has a history of stepping in to help with funding/publishing these games when Square drags their feet. They also know the Switch users are more likely to buy a late port then the PC user base.

We will get the Switch/3DS release simultaneous probably in late 2019 in the west and Nintendo will publish it and save square some money. In fact the deal might already be done, just unannounced and Nintendo doesn't want the 3DS version coming west before the Switch one.
