Stem cells still are being used for certain cancer treatments. A trial I was in recently has 50% of the patients undergoing stem cell therapy as part of the treatment. I was in the other 50%, so i can speak to the effect personally, but its cool that they are still finding new ways to use stem cells.

My mother in law actually works for the biggest stemcell research company in Canada so I keep up with things a bit through her, but only what that company is directly involved in. Some of her stem cell samples are floating around on the ISS at the moment actually, which is pretty rad.

Damn - that is pretty cool. We're going to be in some amazing places as a species in a few decades. Futurists are already pointing at the possibility of practical immortality - for people that have already been born today.

I met Jack Nicklaus in person when he was in his prime. I have his autograph. Greatest golfer ever to play the game. Good to hear he has found a treatment to help him. Professional golfers put a lot of stress on their hips, knees and backs when they play. And to be good, they have to practice a ton.

    Pretty amazing stuff.
Now get your insurance to cover for it. There lies the problem... at least for Americans.

Lol - you hit the nail on the head.

Is there any way to get rid of the insurance companies in America?

Incredible. This has the potential to be one of the biggest revolutions in medical history since mandatory hand-washing.

I can't tell is you're being sarcastic or not - but it certainly (and seriously) does have the potential. Modeling the German doctor's office into a walk-in clinic nation wide would be revolutionary.

What do you mean by "how specialized these treatments are"? Efficient compared to what? Cost shouldn't be an issue for making people healthier. No idea if they can be covered, but they should be.

Looks like the United States has some versions of this therapy already in clinic form. The FDA is "working" to keep regulations consistent, I guess, but they are here, in the U.S. I know the article linked is about ones being closed, but there are others up and running.

Most of stem cell therapy is quackery, and as it is understood or generally misunderstood which is very real and unfortunate. Right now there are some labs if you want to call them that, some might even say clinics that offer stem cell treatment, hell there are even some that claim to be clinical trials except they charge for pleasure of testing what is often times an ineffective or dangerous treatment.

Which is basically where most of the applications fall on. There are some things actually cell therapy can be used to treat, but they are by no means miraculous.

The whole idea that one can take unaffected cells and or grow them then inject them somehow is more quackery.

It might suck but there is actually a pretty damn good reason why treatments take so long to become applied medicine, because even if everything goes right, there are still significant risks that sometimes a cure can actually kill, or something you work to treat, causing a problem somewhere else.
