In the UK they don't, we don't have that sort of tribalism, at least when I was last in shcool (which was 20 years ago lol)

I guess it's an American thing but I was even told those 'jock' characters don't exist in real life and even when they do it's not like how it is percieved, that school and college is kind of mixed its not as tribal as the TV shows and movies make them up to be.

In Holland there is no such thing as these types. Like at all. Though you do have the crowd that seems to smoke a lot (weed), beat up people just because, not make home work, be loud in classes, get pregnant while in their teens, disrupt the classrooms, always need to do chores for school because they were late or obnoxious. Usually these guys are athletic (it is pretty much the only thing going for them). And the girls are trying to act like they are porn stars and are rude to everyone else outside the group.

otherwise everyone else is pretty much the same. Though you have kids that like to live in the 60's - act like hippies - goths. But those people are just as friendly as the next ones.

i was a jock in HS, but all i wanted to be was a grungy metal kid that happened to play football.

never got accepted by the metal kid crowd

but now, i've studied the art of metal. i've seen the prophets metallica, maiden, slayer, and anthrax. i would challenge any of those little druggies to a thrash off today.

High school sports are a big deal in the US because of our size. Texas is bigger than most countries, sure it has professional sports teams but you might have to drive 8 hours to get to see them. Instead people go see their high school teams. It's not uncommon to get thousands of people to turn out for a high school game. So the kids who play well are famous locally.

And that's why we have jocks.
