In almost every instance of this I'd agree. But just because a person says 'I was just joking' doesn't automatically mean that they actually are (which I'm sure you are aware). None of us will truly ever know where his comments came from, what part of him I mean.

And even if it was 100% his way of 'joking around'.... jokes about ****ing little kids crosses a line, IMO, that you just don't cross.

I would've fired James Gunn in a heartbeat if I were Disney. Considering there core audience consists of children, James 'jokes' are extremely sickening. This is one of the few times in my opinion where digging up someone's past is justifiable. I understand that culture evolves and with that certain things become acceptable/unacceptable but I can assure you that at no point in modern history has extremely pedophilic jokes been acceptable. Ultimately I'm glad this info resurfaced and is biting him where it hurts, he could seriously be a danger to the public and more importantly to innocent children.

His firing sucks, he did some solid things with guardians, but he broke a rule with the company.
The replacement will have a rather steep hill to climb, but knowing Marvel and their ability to acquire solid talent, I will remain cautiously optimistic.

For the future, I hope the contracts they write up for the next director, and anyone who follows for any project regardless of their role, has language in their contracts explicitly outlining codes of conduct for not only present, but also historic social media presence, then to go along with it, they should properly vet everyone's history prior to hiring them.
If 4+ year old comments are a problem today for one person, they should be a problem for every person.
Maybe then in the future, someone who makes a satirical remark about a taboo topic won't get hired in the first place, thus preventing articles like this from needing to exist.

Why is that we often mistake shock value for talent in humour and art?

That in combination with two other facts (most other things have lost their shock value, but this is still is shocking) has led to the situation where we will see more situations like this one, Elon Musk's twitter-meltdown, etc; and that will continue to happen as long as those three facts remain.
