Some of these would wind up better than others. Patrolling a road? Stupid. Raiding enemy towns? Great idea, that could easily be a BFA thing. Killing spree? Tried it in WOD as a PvP thing and it was horrible. Escort missions? Plzno. Crafting professions giving xp: Great idea. Could be tied into that "collectors" thing almost like the obliterum where collectors will take in your profession crafted items and return something of value. Practicing being evaluated based on performance? We have that already, talk to your class trainer.

This time you'll get experience or some gold for doing some of those things though .

I think the important part, for things like evaluated based on performance is you get experience from them. This idea is centered around being rewarded by things that make you appreciate the game more, and things that give you a sense of adventure.

I'd also give mini games like Darkmoon faire games experience and gold if I could.

There has been a surge in the MMO market for more immersion and offering more paths to both engage in the game and feel like you're making progression without questing, dungeon running and raiding. (To spite I myself like dungeoning/raiding the most.) I agree offering more options is the path to the future but we're not seeing much innovation in the market, what "companies" there are are basically just copying and pasting. There's a stigma in the industry that you need to play it safe and just copy & paste because anything risky is just that, risky, and will fail. Therefore, you shouldn't do it. While players are becoming increasingly frustrated by companies not taking risks or doing anything new or surprising anymore.

That's something that in some ways, I've given BLIZ alot of credit for. They've dared to change it up in WoW several times, even when it doesn't work and we hate it, they still go for it and try to make it work so they can say they aren't stagnating. Of course, they haven't offered more immersive choices but they have still dared to take some risky chances with how the endgame is model'd and other features in the game, for the better or the worse of the result, so I can't argue they haven't been willing to gamble.

We need a new company to REALLY gamble hard and create a far more immersive MMO.

If only it was as easy as having a vision and that was all it took to do it. If that was all I needed to have to do it, you'd be seeing that kinda game a lot sooner than you'd think. But alas'. Shit aint that simple.

And to be honest it's a bit of Stockholm Syndrome too...
I would sacrifice the entire concept of raiding forevermore for a more immersive world. I'd rather they changed up the world after every expansion (and also every expansion was always on Azeroth not in space) depending on what happened. So, y'know, it was like an actual world that the characters live in and was affected by their actions...

Some of the things that are suggested for XP are interesting (defending a town, for instance). I think on the whole it would be tough to balance and have it not be vulnerable to exploitation, though.

I agree. I give Blizzard props for that. But I think maybe their fear of not providing the ideal content for the right players have made them inept of just being creative and fun. Theyre more worried about what others think rather than knowing what their doing by building up themselves and their logic.

Also how I think this system could work is you open up an interface called "Role Playing" or something and then your asked: "What do you want to do". You pick what you want to do and it sort of begins a quest. These activities include: Going on a pilgramage, patrolling a road, etc. There is also another tab called "What are your interest". This one contains passive "quest" such as I'm interested in: Defending towns, Killing Orcs, Killing Murlocs, Vandalizing enemy towns and it comes with its own progression bar and reward system.
