The problem with D3 was never the auction house

It was the fact that it was the ONLY feasible way to find upgrades. Now you can find upgrades by yourself without a problem. If the AH existed now with the existence of loot 2.0, it would have been a success

The Auction House was the problem and you actually pointed out why. It being the only feasible way to get gear made it the problem and if you can get gear without the auction house then that makes the AH useless.

You can't have a good loot system and a RMAH/AH the two do not go together.

POE has it. the ability to get great drops, craft great gear, and a AH. its very easily doable.

I'm actually glad the two were never combined. All it would take is hitting cap level, farming a couple million gold and suddenly you have all of your BiS gear.

The AH worked BECAUSE loot 2.0 wasn't a thing. If everything always dropped optimized for you it would only take a month at best before everything possible was up on the AH. The fact that back then it was more or less randomized meant that it actually took time to farm the 'perfect' prefixes and suffixes, and when you did find a perfect one, it sold for a fortune.

Since people keep pointing out PoE, just look at it as an example. While it doesn't have an official AH, you can find all sort of stuff on poe.trade that functions for trading. But good luck trying to find Rares with perfect stats on it, it'll cost you a small fortune. Only Uniques had preset stats, and even then a lot of them had ranges the numbers would roll. If you could find one that had max rolls on every stat, it too could potentially sell for a lot. This wouldn't work if everything dropped with perfect stats, nothing would be worth a damn.

And never mind the fact that the currency also has double use as items for rolling better stats on gear. So fucking annoying.
