"How we built a $2000 custom gaming PC" - The Verge

This has some of the most egregious misinformation I have seen in a while and for those who may not be experienced in regards to building computers but would like to try then for the love of whatever you hold dear do not use this for anything other than how to do nearly everything wrong.

If you take a drink every time he does or says something wrong you'll be on your ass in under 11 minutes. Comments are disabled for a reason.

After watching the first few minutes it seems pretty reasonable...

Lol, he drowned that cpu in thermal paste.
I think he also fucked up on the RAM channel slots.

It's kind of like a treasure hunt. There's definitely more!

More like "how i built a 2k$ gaming pc without adult supervision". It works but it's super sloppy work and nobody should look up to this video as a guide to how to do it right. Irresponsible of the verge to present this video as one.

I liked the "Make sure the PSU isn't touching the case so it wont short circuit it"

For 2000$ you get a i7 + 1080ti and a better looking not overpriced case.
Btw how does his channel have 2.1 million subs ?

That thermal paste application though... A... uh... "unique" way of doing it.
I sat alone in the dark one night, tuning in by remote.
I found a preacher who spoke of the light, but there was Brimstone in his throat.
He'd show me the way, according to him, in return for my personal check.
I flipped my channel back to CNN and lit another cigarette.

After watching it, i can say i have seen much worse video, but this one does indeed fall in the category of "i have no idea what im doing, im just following the script and that 11 minutes videos probably took over 5 hours because i needed help on every single step"
Way too much information and/or not enough explanation depending on the topic... and really? a canif? you spent 2k on a computer so i guess you couldnt afford good screwdrivers?

I dont know what a motherboard is/does, but i want to custom build my own computer! make sense

Let's plug in everything and end with the cpu! It's always a good idea to have to work in a small area where you could damage other stuff instead of plugging the cpu in at the start!

Who watches a video like this when they don't even know in the most basic terms what a CPU or Motherboard does? If you don't know that you shouldn't be building a PC at all.

    Also, BUY A FUCKING SCREWDRIVER!!!!!!

I've built a grand total of 1 PC so I am far from an expert but the order of process' just seem to make it as hard as possible to do each part.

The Verge isn't exactly about building computers, I wouldn't expect them to have a good video about it. They probably know it's bad, and probably don't care about it as long as it's passable. Their viewers usually don't know about it either.

Was he including the monitor and peripherals in the 2K budget? Surely he would have mentioned that if he had...

I put his exact build into pcpartpicker and only came up with $1690. So his math sucks as bad as his cable management.

Yeah. I mean, the PSU literally bolts to the case itself. It's like saying if you keep one hand off of your stove, it won't burn anything else.

I think the 'pads' he was talking about were just noise/vibration reduction pads.

Everyone must be afraid to correct him when he says dumb shit out of fear of being called a racist. This is the result.

Wait... he suggests a swiss army knife with a Phillips head rather than a real screwdriver??? I am WTFing in under a minute.

LMAO love his reasoning for where he installs the graphics card.

Aside from the comedic aspects of things like his power supply and motherboard brace stuff there is the RAM in the wrong slots so no benefit from dual channel, no fans on the CPU cooler's radiator so bad thermals, and the way he applied thermal paste to IHS while leaving the base paste on the cooler can lead the air pockets which also will affect thermals.

If it was a personal build it wouldn't really matter, but they are going to use this system to benchmark. Unsure how much performance the RAM will cause, but if he is unlucky the CPU could thermal throttle and affect the results. Would suck if their viewers didn't know any better and used their video and benchmark results as reasons to purchase parts.

It just won't transfer heat as well.

So this is what it's like when you spend all your money on producing a high quality video, but spend no time on research. :P
Yeah, a mate of mine put thermal paste on the IHS when using a liquid cooler and was hitting high 80s C at idle, when I took off the cooler there was a large air pocket stuck in the middle. Gamers Nexus did a really good piece on thermal paste amounts and methods awhile back. I'm sure if The Verge reached out to some of the computer build Youtubers they would have been happy to do a video, shame they didn't.

Hope the image works, never had to post one before, but the Verge article on this video shows a picture of the final build and posted it above.

Other than the obvious cable management issues like the supplemental power for the motherboard, I did notice that he finally clued in that the long screws he was using for the cooler's radiator were for fans, just hope he didn't damage the cooler screwing them in all the way from the top.

One thing that really caught my eye when I was admiring this 2018 abstract art piece was one of the screws for the cooler were missing.

Really feel bad for this guy, going to be trolled badly when I doubt it was really his fault.
