Colin Kaepernick Named Face of Nike's 30th Anniversary of 'Just Do It' Campaign

Nike selected former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick as the face of its "Just Do It" campaign, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Darren Rovell of ESPN reported the choice of Kaepernick, who started the movement to kneel during the United States national anthem to protest racial injustice in August 2016.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," he told Steve Wyche of NFL Media about the decision two years ago. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the Niners in March 2017 and hasn't been able to find a new team since. An April visit with the Seattle Seahawks was postponed after he did not assure the franchise he'd stand for the anthem if signed, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The 30-year-old quarterback filed a collusion grievance against the league, which claimed he was being kept out of the league because of the protests he started. His argument received a boost last week when arbitrator Stephen B. Burbank ruled there was enough evidence to require a full hearing.

Although Kaepernick has received numerous honors for his efforts, including being named GQ magazine's Citizen of the Year for 2017, the movement he started remains polarizing.

A poll from NBC News and the Wall Street Journal released last week showed 54 percent of respondents deemed kneeling during the anthem "inappropriate," while 43 percent called it "appropriate."

Meanwhile, NFL owners approved anthem rules in May that would force players to stand on the sideline or remain in the locker room during the anthem. Teams with players who did not comply with the new policy would be subject to league fines, while teams could hand out individual punishment.

Those guidelines are on hold, however, as discussions between the NFL and the NFL Players Association continue with the 2018 season set to start Thursday night.
Good on Nike. Kaepernick isn't wrong. My brother is a Public Accuntability Prosecutor (District Attorney that investigates and prosecutes corruption by public officials of all types, including but not limited to cops) in New York City, and you wouldn't believe the rank criminality, abuse, incompetence, and corruption that goes on among police officers. As he put it, Police Officers are entrusted with such a significant responsibility that they should be held to the very highest standards of accountability, and not "gone easy on", ever.

It's shocking that anybody would ever want to hold a public official to anything less than a very high bar. Oh wait... *looks at the executive branch*

Cue the cries #BoycottNike from Emperor Trump, Inquisitor Hannity and the rest of the MAGATs.

Just a reminder though to all us decent people, their patriotism is a great fraud. They don't know the meaning of the word.

I didn't and still don't understand the supposed outrage over the NFL player protests. So instead of standing with their hand on their heart, a gesture of endearment, they take choose to take a knee, another gesture of endearment. Regardless of the cause any of those players promoted, I don't see how that action was worth nearly 1/3 of the controversy it received.

It isn't. The outrage is manufactured.

The majority of people who watch football, tend to be a bit thick. That's really all there is to the argument of kneeling being disrespectful.

Excellent choice. And though this might piss the NFL off, Nike's apparel contract with them runs through 2028, so the NFL won't be able to do anything about it for 10 years. Brilliant!

If you work at a burger joint, don't tell every single customer you are vegan and meat is murder or you are gonna get fired.

If you are a public representative of the overly patriotic National Football League...

No. What the believe in is a fictional Saturday morning cartoon superhero, Flag Man, and all three-color simplicity to it.

What they don't actually believe in or recognize is the founding principles of this free country which allow for men like Kaepernick to exercise their rights.

After Trump not putting the flag at the White House at half staff for John McCain until he was forced to, the MAGATs don't get to say shit about patriotism ever again.

How dare a black man stand up for black rights in a league that is 80% black amirite?

How long before the Cheeto-in-Chief calls for a boycott of Nike?

Either way you go on the issue, I have to wonder if getting into politics as a corporation is a savvy move. I know that research has shown that Millennials want their brands to "stand for something", but are Millennials really the target audience of the NFL?

Seems like a risky move, hopefully everything works out fine in the end for everyone involved.

To add something further, I think there are racial injustice issues that need to be talked about in this country, and at the same time police officers are in a very dangerous line of work, putting actual bad people behind bars for the safety of all of us. As someone who unfortunately ran afoul of the law over a decade ago, I can tell you first hand that, in my opinion, about 90% of the people in prison you would walk away thinking, "Thank God they're locked up." Police officers do us all a great service, and many die doing so. That doesn't take away the Walter Scotts and the Eric Garners, but I feel like anyone wholly taking one side or the other doesn't see the full picture.

Ironically one of the key problems with policing in the US is that the very same people which live in a fake-reality where Cops shouldn't be held accountable, don't want to pay higher taxes to support better training, more cops, and better benefits to cops.

Resultingly, many police forces are under-staffed and have difficulty recruiting. When my best friend got out of the Army after 2 tours in Afghanistan, he interviewed for a police job, and lost it because he (with a 4 year degree under his belt too) was found essentially to be hysterically overqualified for one.

If people didn't boycott nike for sweatshops they're not going to do it for this.

Also, Kappernick didn't sacrifice anything - he was a mediocre qb that was already on the way out, left his 10 million dollar contract because he thought he was hot shit, and then declined the offers he was given.
