The Super Saiyan thing was created to make the artists lives easier in terms of coloring, and many times he was encouraged to make some characters more interesting or to introduce a new character. That's why sometimes a person who is the "creator" goes off to make a clone of it and fails spectacularly because he wasn't the only person involved obviously.
