Should Square Enix give us a Final Fantasy game with a new interesting universe?

After getting tired of Western RPGs I decided to check out the Final Fantasy games. The newest one did not appeal to because I didn't like the aesthetic. I did fall in love with FF9 and FF6.

When can Square Enix give us a party of capable soldiers, thieves, and mercenaries with a story that rivals the Witcher or even Game of Thrones instead of moody boy bands?

I also want an interesting new universe! It doesn't have to be medieval like Dragon Age or The Witcher!

I would also like a story that doesn't involve fighting ancient gods.

SE gives us a new universe with almost every Final Fantasy (they've revisted Ivalice before). The also have a wide variety of classes or specializations that appear in their games. I'd cross out Game of Thrones on your list because that's comparing a book series to video games. Rivaling the Witcher, well they already do. They just have a different style than that development team because they have a different focus (and culture). SE goes hard on fantasy with their games. They are vibrant worlds (aside from 15) that have larger than life characters and magic. You are fighting gods in some entries or bosses that are the size of buildings. You have spells that in some cases cause blasts of light from outer space or mythical creatures to appear.

    I don’t want another FF15 tbh.

Tbh, I don’t mind if it’s in a “new” universe or not... I just care that the gameplay isn’t as bad as the past few games have been.

FFX was the last FF game that I really loved the combat for. MMOs aside, XII was decent, but too automated. XIII has a lot of potential, but a few really huge flaws. The less said about XV the better...

So if XVI has a combat system similar to FFX or before, I’m happy.

No. FF15 was complete and utter garbage. How about they finish working on FF7 remake which they've been promising for 4 years now. Stick to JRPG's and stop trying to push another immersive world to tack premium features onto like every single other developer.

Final Fantasy 8 is literally about Armies and Mercenaries.

I just wish they would go back to being a simple fantasy RPG. I can't understand how a company can go from FFXV to Octopath Traveler. And I'm just guessing but I imagine that OT did way more in sales then FFXV did (and was probably cheaper and faster to produce).

Completely different teams /shrug. XV sold more so far (more systems then octopath), but it needs even more to break even with dev cost. It's at around 8.5 but needs 10. Octopath is breaking expectations, but it's also not for everyone, think they were trying to hit a new audience with XV.

VII should be interesting.... now that KH3 is done work should be started in full on it. But if they use more modern combat systems it may turn people off, we don't know, last time they talked about combat systems was when the game was being made off site.

I'm down with the steam punk high fantasy blend. The most recent one's have been, what I assume, a lot of drugs and crazy Japanese shit. Back to 6/7 or something completely different without summons chocobo etc.

FF has been set in various eras in each of their own worlds... they have yet to have one focusing on Space, but then that'd be threading in Star Oceans territory.

Cyberpunk FF would be neat too.

Well for the story part, they would need to hire western writers. They're never gonna make a good story in Japan mainly because they somehow accepted that characters should have exaggerated and absolutely awkward reactions to the most mundane stuff like insane gasping and shit. It will always feel extremely cringy like FFXV. The old FF games had none of the very bad voice acting, none of the very bad gasping and crazy mouth sounds you see in every anime. You could read the story and the dialogue the way it's meant to be: aka natural instead of forced bad acting.

Thank you for this, SquareEnix, perfect portrayal of human behaviour.

First reply and bang on the nose; well mostly.

Re the "mostly" bit. I just finished FF15 and I wanted to ask you, particularly since you're genuinely the first person I've seen online who appeared to dislike FF15s world and is also not citing it as the worst game ever made.

What was it about FF15s world that, in your opinion, made it not vibrant? Maybe I was just too distracted by the graphics or combat to notice (especially the combat, I honestly thought I would hate this part, but it grew on me quite a bit; reminded me of Star Ocean: Til the end of Time). Is this judgement based on aesthetics? I just don't really get where a lot of the hate from people comes from. (Referring to the main game itself mind; not the post game stuff which while fun, lost its appeal fairly quickly for me).

While I would love something entirely new; I think there are some elements that need to be in every single Final Fantasy title in one form or another. Chocobos are among those. Espers are part of the formula too but have much more interpretation room IE: Espers vs Aeons vs Gods or simply having powerful ships named Ifrit, Shiva, etc.

Also need someone named Cid. There's always gotta be a Cid Highwind and they always need to be a tech.

    OT:
Outside of something entirely new there are a few worlds I wouldn't mind revisiting. Vana'diel and/or Eorzea in particular would be nice to visit in a single player rpg. I'm always happy to go back to Ivalice of course (sidenote: Didn't we get some kind of info suggesting Ivalice and Eorzea were on the same planet?)

Was Cid a technician in Tactics? I don't remember.

In tactics specifically I think he was a Judge?

BUT, loophole here, since Tactics takes place in Ivalice. Where there is also the Cid who headed Draklor Laboratory in Arcadia (Balthiers dad).

Then again.....neither of them were Cid Highwind, so maybe neither count?

EDIT: Just checked wiki, Doctor Cid is the "official" cid.

EDIT 2: Okay nvm the whole "being a tech" part entirely. The other tactics games shat all over this apparently. There's even a Cid that's not even human and leads some clan of hunters in one of them (where the hell was I when these came out again?) /shrug

EDIT 3: Apparently he's an effing Thunder God in one of the tactics remakes? .........what?

    1. Don't dismiss the era that voice acting was done in. It's fairly relevant. Basically no voice acting in PS1 and PS2 era were exactly award worthy.
    2. Going to the Tidus laugh video as some sort of evidence makes your argument seem insincere and disingenuous when doing so completely ignores the entire context of the scene. I'll agree, it's weird and it's always going to be one of those examples of awkward voice acting/directing, but within the context of the scene it's not remotely as bad as people try to claim.

The whole Tidus laugh thing is suppose to be absurd, I'm not sure why people have such a hard time understanding this.

Yeah, in Tactics 1 for PS1, he was a Holy Knight. Just didn't know if he was also a technician of some sort.

And if you haven't played Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced 2, you should try to pick it up. Really good game.
