The German expedition was doomed from the very start. You absolutely CANNOT control such a vast territory. Sure, you maybe conquer a few cities, so what?! You can't hold them for long. Your forces will just get pressured every day from all directions. It would be a war of attrition that an invader cannot possibly win. America couldn't even defeat Vietnam, given it's a much smaller country AND it had Vietnamese allies as well, and it was still a too expensive war of attrition that America had to pull out of. This is why you can't invade anything these days. You can only temporarily conquer something, and then lose it because you will then have to stretch your forces to thin in order to hold everything, that the web will snap, cities will be taken back, alliances will form to fight you, etc...
Only way to conquer a country. Absolutely only way. Is to gain the population on your side, at least partially, because if the entire population is hostile to you, it's not happening.

The two competing interests are Ukrain and Russia so this statement is weird.Russia's top security official has warned that neighboring Ukraine may no longer be a country soon as the former Soviet republic is divided by competing interests.
Anyway, Ukraine is pretty fckd, they were a contested territory for most of their existence and it continues to this day.
Their younger workforce has already fled to Poland and soon to Germany, when they open up the market for them (despite not being in EU - seems like Germany is sucking up workers from around the world like a black hole).
