You can always leave a religion, you cannot really "leave" being white, or black. For example, if your signature is correct, you would be a prime candidate of having reasons to walk away. That's because you only hear one side of a single story that the media spins for you as a narrative. Funny thing is, when I was a recent arrival in the US, my mother, brother, and I were flying into NYC. I was 12, my brother 9. There was an issue with our flight, we arrived late for our connection, and our luggage went on to Seattle without us. We were left stranded in NYC with no money and a hotel voucher. Next morning we were trying to get to the airport to make our flight, and my mom had no money for the cab ride. She approached a taxi driver, typical NYC/NJ-looking Italian guy, fit all the stereotypes of a guy called Sal. She said she had no money but would give him her wedding ring if he'd just get us to the airport. he told her and her two stranded kids to fuck off and drove away. An Egyptian cabbie overheard and offered to take us. Not only did he not accept the ring in payment, he said if we had any issues with our flight we could stay with him and his wife, and that as a Muslim he couldn't let a woman travelling alone with her children go unhelped. He even got ticketed because he insisted on stopping his cab in the drop-off point to help us with our luggage. The traffic cop was on him in seconds to ticket him.

So while I absolutely stand against the ideas of Salafism and Islamic extremism, throwing the entire Muslim population under the bus is the sort of thing Islamists do in their polemics against Christians/Jews/The West. It was interesting though that day I got my first taste of the difference in how Americans treat people and how ethnic minorities in the US treat people, and since then, almost all of my friends, social advancement, and meaningful connections in the US have come through other ethnic communities, and not white America at large. What a first day in America.

Good luck then, honestly. I actually have many Muslim friends, and many ex-Muslims. Also have read the Quran, together with tafsir and sirah and parts of hadith, and enjoyed it just like I enjoyed the Bible. I have a lot of respect for the rightly guided caliphs period and the Arab expansion, so your assumptions are somewhat wrong. My criticisms have less to do with Islam specifically, and more to do with religion in general, but this is not the place for that. You will encounter rabid opposition to reform though, you know how bidah works. The reality remains that Sunni constitute maybe 80-85% of the Muslim population, and while you will definitely find more understanding in a Sufi/Shia/Ahmadi etc. community, they do remain small minorities within Islam.

Again, good luck, but do be extra careful.

I too have strong views against religion in general as well, but whenever someone says "Muslims" they generally have a good idea of what they despise and it's brown-skinned ethnic looking people with beards and women wearing some form of head-covering. A white convert to Islam they would never ever levy their vitriol against unless perhaps he or she outright admitted to following the religion.

So I don't have the luxury of just "letting it go" as I would still be called a Muslim. But I understand what you are trying to say and I know you mean well so thank you .
