Exclamation House Passes the Most Significant Democracy Reform Bill in a Generation

Shame the "liberal" corporate media didnt generate more headlines about this major piece of legislation. It like they were mostly selling hot takes on the culture war.

Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed the most significant democracy reform bill introduced in Congress since the Watergate era. By a vote of 234 to 193. The sweeping bill, known as HR 1: the For the People Act:
    • would massively expand voting rights
    • crack down on gerrymandering
    • reduce the influence of big money in politics
    • require sitting presidents and presidential candidates to release 10 years of tax returns
    • establish nationwide automatic voter registration
    • Election Day registration
    • two weeks of early voting in every state

The 622-page bill, was first introduced by House Democrats in early January.

Democrats passed their sweeping anti-corruption bill known as HR 1. It’s already doomed in the Senate.

House Democrats officially passed their massive anti-corruption and pro-democracy reform bill known as HR 1 on Friday. The bill passed on a final vote of 234 to 193.

The sweeping bill is aimed at getting money out of politics and increasing transparency around donors, cracking down on lobbying, and expanding voting rights for Americans by implementing provisions like automatic voter registration.

As they passed the bill that was their first priority of the year, Democrats were in a celebratory mood.

“HR 1 restores the people’s faith that government works for the public interest, the people’s interest, not the special interest,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. “It is fundamental to our democracy that people believe that actions taken here will be in their interest. That is what this legislation will help to restore.”

But the bill is already dead on arrival in the Senate, where Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed he won’t bring it up.

“This is a terrible proposal; it will not get any floor time in the Senate,” McConnell told reporters on Wednesday. He said he instead wants to focus on banning the practice of “ballot harvesting,” where volunteers collect filled-out ballots and drop them off at polling places to be counted. McConnell referred to the state of California — where ballot harvesting is legal — suggesting the practice could be why House Republicans lost so badly in the state during the 2018 midterms.

Democrats were under no illusion that HR 1 would get a welcome reception from Senate Republicans or President Donald Trump, but they hope the message they are sending is one the public buys — that money and corruption in politics should be eradicated.

“It is a fight we will not end until we win it,” Pelosi said, adding, “we can save a lot of time by the Senate just agreeing to a vote.”

Cant wait for the "bothsides" takes on Fox and CNN, then for them to echo in the toilet bowl here for a week.

The Trump base feel that the mission of protecting the border has been corrupted to win elections. I don't see this addressed. And since the Trump base is on the verge of revolt, I don't see how this fights corruption. Most likely this bill will help push the US towards civil unrest.
TO FIX WOW:1. smaller server sizes & server-only LFG awarding satchels, so elite players help others. 2. "helper builds" with loom powers - talent trees so elite players cast buffs on low level players XP gain, HP/mana, regen, damage, etc. 3. "helper ilvl" scoring how much you help others. 4. observer games like in SC to watch/chat (like twitch but with MORE DETAILS & inside the wow UI) 5. guild leagues to compete with rival guilds for progression (with observer mode).6. jackpot world mobs.

Oh I can't wait to see the Trumpsters try and tell us why this is bad thing.

this wont pass the senate because the GOP doesnt want democracy, they want power.

its very telling that McConnell is against ballot harvesting, which is really just helping people vote.. which is.. you know.. democracy

The Trump base will respond when it selects a new leader after Trump is gone. That new leader will be MUCH further to the right than Trump, because obviously the message the Trump base sent to the left has been ignored when they look at this bill.

This is a great focal point for Dem’s to lean on in 2020 and should generally be support by both parties as it addresses multiple points of failure with the current voting system.

Although it won’t be supported by Republicans primarily because they rely on gerrymandering, big money donations from corporations, and extremely restrictive voting regulations to secure seats in Congress. But most importantly it’s a Democrat bill

They even admit that this wasn't going to get any traction... This is all a PR stunt. They're spending all their time and taxpayer money to trick people to siding with them.

What exactly about this bill is so offensive to the Trump base?

the fact that it wont get traction is just a provable example of why the GOP is corrupt and needs to be replaced.

The Trump base sees the current political climate as one where democrats identify likely democrat voters from foreign nations, bring them into the nation in large numbers, and then give them the right to vote with a bill like this.

I think its likely the Trump base will revolt if something like this passes because to them it is the democrats sanctioning an invasion of their nation.

Any citizen of the United States already has the right to vote...doesn't matter if they were born in a foreign nation.

This bill had no bipartisan support and goes after the presidents tax returns. It takes power away from the states to manage their own elections. Fedarilizing the election process makes it easier to manipulate and takes power away from local government.

good, because many states obviously cant handle the responsibility to fight gerrymandering and voter suppression.

when this bill has been sent to the senate 70 something times like ACA repeal then you may have a point.

it won't get traction because the treason turtle won't bring this to a vote.

It is well-documented that 2nd generation latino immigrants vote democrat in massive numbers. So you bring in large numbers of immigrants knowing their kids will vote for you. So the Trump base sees democrat immigration policy as republican voter suppression.

It’s dangerous to centralize the election process. We are a republic for a reason. The power of elections should remain with the states.
