Canada adds neo-Nazi groups Blood & Honour, Combat 18 to list of terror organizations

The government has, for the first time, placed right-wing extremist groups on its list of outlawed terrorist organizations, adding the names of Blood & Honour and Combat 18.

Announced in the government’s Canada Gazette, the action came after the Canadian Security Intelligence Service said in a report on Friday it had increased its “posture” on the far right.

Blood & Honour was described by the government as “an international neo-Nazi network whose ideology is derived from the National Socialist doctrine of Nazi Germany.”

Combat 18 is the armed branch of Blood & Honour and has conducted murders and bombings, the government said in the description of the group on the Public Safety Canada website.

Social media had allowed the far right to spread its ideology and inspire attacks, it said.

there isnt much you can do beyond try to find them first and steer them somewhere else

Blood & Honour is a neo-Nazi music promotion network and political group founded in the United Kingdom in 1987. Founded by Ian Stuart Donaldson and Nicky Crane, it is composed of white nationalists and has links to Combat 18.

Social media definitely plays a role, but it's not making them the way they are.

The world is full of people who are racist shitlords or susceptible to shitlordism. Prior to the internet, racist shitlords had to physically go out and look for other racist shitlords to organize with. People susceptible to those messages had to be in the right place with the right people to get converted. Post-internet, 10 keystrokes can get you in touch with people who think the way you do, and shitty messages just have to be shared by a friend of a friend of a friend to reach people who might be willing to listen to what those messages have to say.

It's why deplatforming works. But it doesn't make people into something they weren't already: either extremist assholes or people open to extremism.
