I thought Annihilation was pretty horrible tbh. So much about it just made no sense.
In a similar vein to The Man From Earth, I really enjoyed Coherence. Indie movie that basically just takes place in a room, but gets quite clever with the idea of parallel worlds. Apparently it was mostly unscripted.
You want a good hard sci-fi film? Watch The Martian. It's like the exact opposite of Gravity; instead of characters surviving or perishing due to random chance, The Martian is all about using science and planning to overcome technical obstacles. It's also well-paced.
Moon is also a really good, underappreciated science fiction film. It's a real tense slow burn, but it's pretty damn cool.
Also, Event Horizon is a bad movie. Hilariously bad, but bad nonetheless. I don't think it's what you're looking for, OP.
Of those films District 9, 5th element, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Total recall feature a lot of violence and/or evil aliens, which seems against what the OP is asking for.
Also, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind is a great film, but it's no more "science fiction" than Inception was.

“Do not lose time on daily trivialities. Do not dwell on petty detail. For all of these things melt away and drift apart within the obscure traffic of time. Live well and live broadly. You are alive and living now. Now is the envy of all of the dead.” ~ Emily3, World of Tomorrow
Words to live by.
More sciency sci-fi flicks I like: Ex Machina, Gattaca, Sunshine, Moon, The Martian
The 5th Element? Really?
And just what was that 5th element again?
I agree with many of the movies mentioned here. I'd add Annihilation if you consider psychology a science, and I am Mother if you are into artificial intelligence speculation.
Coherence was good.
It reminds me of a plot for a book or movie I've had rattling around in my head. The story is about how, in the far future, religion is banned and most people are atheists. The scientific community, being rooted in hard science, is run by a particularly hardcore version of atheism. Society has rejected religion to a point where parents have started giving their kids demonic names like Abaddon, Beelzebub, Belial, etc. A group of them develop time travel. They test it on themselves and go back in time, but it goes horribly wrong. They are now in the past, but they are somehow trapped on a mysterious plane of existence. They can move about in the past and hear people talk, but they cannot interact with anything unless they get very emotional and even then its very hard. People living in the past can just barely perceive them and only some of them. Some people interpret these interactions as ghosts or demons and wield Christian symbols and holy water etc against them which pisses the time traveling atheists off because to them its all stupid myth, and their anger at the Christian symbols ironically allows them to manifest briefly in the Earthly plane and move things around.
Some of them are stuck there for a very long time and, unable to do anything else, get mean and start torturing those on the earthly plane. The head scientist who developed time travel went back millions of years and got stuck in this odd plane of existence as well. His name was Zozo. After millions of years, trapped, unable to die, just existing, he kinda went insane and he's been a big big problem for humanity throughout history.
Then to add to another layer to this, in a far FAR future, long after time travel was first discovered, scientists mastered time travel to a great degree. They also are aware of how the first time travelers got trapped. They've elected to NOT rescue them, because they've become woven into human history too deeply. Instead, they go back in time and try to mitigate the damage. This second group of scientists are what we know as angels, and the collective group is what we might call God.
There's a lot of parallel worlds and stuff mixed in there.
TO FIX WOW:1. smaller server sizes & server-only LFG awarding satchels, so elite players help others. 2. "helper builds" with loom powers - talent trees so elite players cast buffs on low level players XP gain, HP/mana, regen, damage, etc. 3. "helper ilvl" scoring how much you help others. 4. observer games like in SC to watch/chat (like twitch but with MORE DETAILS & inside the wow UI) 5. guild leagues to compete with rival guilds for progression (with observer mode).6. jackpot world mobs.
