Play alts but don't care about bis essences or neck level.

Short term - Get to cap and do the main quest lines. Long term - content that's used in the future. Example would be allied races. I have no intention of playing a dark iron dwarf...but I might years from now. That class order hall? Never leveled it because I knew it'd never be used again after that expansion.

I just play other games. I'm not doing any end game content, I just play on a bunch of different alts which is also fun.

Be an adult. Play when I want. Stop if I'm not having fun and just doing it to fill time.

Ultimately this is down to self-control. There's no magic system. Do what you want, what makes you happy. Don't play for others, don't feel like you need to do something because it's there if you don't actually like doing it.

    "But I'm forced...."

No. You're not. You're a real person who has the power make your own choices. If you don't or won't... that's still a choice.

I play when I feel like and watch stuff or play other games when I don’t. I cranked out the new season of She-Ra the other week and I’m rewatching Kim Possible now that D+ is out.

I didn't say you did. I said if you pick just one toon, you are at risk of seeing your class get a heavy nerf which may force you to main something else and not have anything else built up (demonology was my example).
TO FIX WOW:1. smaller server sizes & server-only LFG awarding satchels, so elite players help others. 2. "helper builds" with loom powers - talent trees so elite players cast buffs on low level players XP gain, HP/mana, regen, damage, etc. 3. "helper ilvl" scoring how much you help others. 4. observer games like in SC to watch/chat (like twitch but with MORE DETAILS & inside the wow UI) 5. guild leagues to compete with rival guilds for progression (with observer mode).6. jackpot world mobs.

I unsub for 6-8 months every expansion (in total). Atm I have been unsubbed for 3 months (basically since we Curved and stopped raiding until 8.3) and after we have Curved the last raid tier, it will be a fulll break until next expansion!

This is the only way to keep me interested and longing for coming back! The days of daily grind is so fucking over it's crazy, that was fun 15 years ago but hell no that I cba to do that nowadays without burning out asap.

Basically I stop play when I find myself bored, WoW is not my "main/only" game since probably MoP, so whenever I'm not having fun or start hating something in the game I just stop buying tokens and stop playing altogether. There is plenty of other stuff to do, series to watch, games to play etc. etc.

during wod my play time was about 20 hours a week, lots of pvp. legion and bfa wrekt my 20 hours play time experience and turned it into living hell for subtlety rogues. thus keeping me from enjoying the game further. so now i stay logged out. don't know is shadow lands is gonna change this.

    Basically what i do is:
Push the boundaries of "gameplay customization" for one spec in PvP and casual Mythic+ dungeons.
When i exhaust every single customization option...is time to change spec and try it all over again.
When i exhaust a class...is time to try a new class and start all over again.
Unfortunatelly for me, i only enjoy Monk, Rogue and Demon Hunter...and WoW is not exactly a good game in this department.

Season 1 of BFA was a 9/10 with un-nerfed azerite traits.
Essenses got me excited and i had tons of fun trying different ones.

    Eventually burned out
my mechanism is very simple - i play 5-6 hours a week which ensures that i have plenty to do and nearly never burn out.

i also know when "ok its enough for this tier" - in my case atm the only time i play horde alts is when WF is up for 430 rewards. i also finished leveling all 12 allience alts but i dont waste time gearing them up untill 8.3 and then will do it via timewalking to instantly catch up with gear.

so i focus on getting as many alts to 120 as possible before 8.3 hits via incursions only + 3 warcampaing quests still have 10 alts to push through should be done before new tier as it takes me around 4-5 hours each alt to level 111-120

i do plan in 2020 to do heavy transmog farms in WoD/MoP raids to fully unlock transmog sets on all chars. will be easy since i have atm 29 x 120 and many of them are trippling some specs this will give me 3-4 months of gameplay

Having a job and a gf limit my play time enough so that I don't get burned out.
I don't think there is any other way except limiting your play time, if you play 6+ hours a day it's inevitable Other activies are probably better rather just play other games, but playing other games for a few days and no wow can also work.

Wow is only one of the 5 games that I rotate regularly so it's not a problem.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is what we call a "mega casual" who never amounts to anything in the game because all he does is puerile content and plays the game like a Facebook game.

I enjoyed essences right up until I wanted to play a 2nd character. Then I no longer enjoyed essences.

As for preventing burnout? I just stop playing if I feel bored. I've got a massive backlog of games on steam I know I'll enjoy so I'd rather not waste my time bored playing anything ever.

Well I personally subscribe like 2-3 times per expansion for 1-3 months since Wotlk.

Only play content you think is fun to do (because it's fun by itself or because you like the rewards enough to think it's fun). If no content like that exist anymore, stop playing until there is new content. Usually, for me, that means doing islands and emissaries and so on for a month, doing M+ and raiding for 3 month and then playing other games until the next patch.

Biggest warning signs that you are turning into a toxic puddle of forum hate and should stop playing immedeatly are if you start using words like "mandatory" "have to" or "efficient" and so on.

I play games from a massively differing genres. Lately, that's mostly Stellaris.
I also play alts with UI mods; the game looks different and with the right mods, also is controlled differently. This doesn't help as much as the above stated, though.

Depends on the expansion and what it offers. During Legion, being the alt-junkie I am, I leveled all the classes to cap. Then did their order hall campaigns, class mount quests, and worked on artifact skins. During BfA, I've checked out new content when it's released, hit cap with my alts, and then in all honesty I've been playing other games. I haven't had too much issue with BfA content, it's just been a lean expansion with content that isn't all that re-playable. Why burn myself out on it?
