I've been ordering Papa Johns for years and haven't noticed anything recently. Still the best!
I'm gonna be "that ghetto" guy and say I've nothing but praise for Little Caesar's $5 pizza pies. At least the one I go to is always fresh, cheap, and quick and is about as healthy as Papa Johns.
I get that when I'm hungry and I don't give a damn what I eat.

I think HQ is gonna come down on your neighbourhood PJ's. So much wasted electricity!

Little Caesar's is on par with a frozen pizza. Which is fine considering its cheep and ready. I sometimes have it on the way to board game night.
Also Mike Illitch was a better person then John Fuckhead. Papa John's has shitty pizza and he's piece of shit on top of that.
Well I mean, NY pizza tends to have a sweeter sauce like it has tomato paste in it, NJ has very natural tomato based sauce that tends to be "thinner", chicago has a very thick sauce where their pizza is more like a big bread lasagna. Other areas do other things, but who really gives a fuck about them.
I guess it's a hard question to answer if you dont have experience with other pizzas.
We had two nice pizza restaurants near our house growing up. One was a Godfather's Pizza, had a pizza buffet and an arcade hall. I spent many a quarter and night there playing games with my family. Then one day it closed up, leaving us with no good pizza in town. Then about 7 years ago a place called KC's Pizza opened up. The prices were dirt cheap, so we ordered like 20 bucks worth of stuff and got like two large pizzas, some mozzarella sticks, breadsticks, wings and maybe some pasta. The food was delicious. It was literally the best cheese pizza I've ever had in my life. I don't even like cheese pizza, but this pizza blew any meat lovers, supreme, or any other combination of pizza out of the water. The best part is the pizza was like 5 bucks for a large, and it was a large large, not like a 10 inch large like some chains try to throw at you. Then one day, KC's closed up. We really haven't had any good pizza place near us since. Pizza hut is the closest, and they're the best out of the places even near us, but they are such a mixed bag. Either it's "good", or it's REALLY bad. The few times I've had Papa John's I was not impressed. I don't know if it's just because of my texture issues with vegetables, but the sauce they put on their pizza is super chunky, and it's not cooked well, so it's.... crunchy. I hate the feeling of crunchy vegetables. In my mind it's like eating worms. So based on that alone I'd never order Papa John's myself. I don't know anything about the politics of the former CEO, nor do I care. The Pizza Police aren't gonna show up at my door for not ordering papa john's pizza, so they can get bent.
Really, the best pizza is from smaller places. Avoid the bigger chains if you can. If a new place in your town opens up, and they have good food, tell your friends. Tell everyone. Send as much business as you can their way. Make sure they stick around. Because once they close down from lack of business, you will definitely miss them. Fast food may be an addiction, but you might as well be eating good tasting food if you're going to feed that addiction.
The most common type of pizza in the UK probably comes from a local takeaway that will also do burgers, kebabs, fried stuff and possibly curries; the quality can vary massively. They're normally 10" diameter, base is quite thin but crisp and bready, usually able to support the weight of the toppings. Sauce is fairly thick so it sits on top of the base and doesn't really sink in. Cheese is generous and a combo of cheddar and mozzarella. I was a bit flippant with my earlier answer but it isn't entirely wrong to say UK pizzas are basically tomato, cheese and toppings on a piece of bread - two slices put together make a pretty decent sandwich. Toppings are typical fare like ham, mushrooms, pineapple, olives, chicken, peppers, onions, pepperoni. It's not unusual to see some include doner meat (similar to shawarma) or marinated meats like chicken tikka or spicy beef.
Local specialist restaurants will have their own spin on bases and toppings, either aiming for a more authentic Italian dish or incorporating some other cuisine. Sourdough bases are fairly popular at the moment.
