In Warcraft 3 Cenarius was not only exclusively affected by Chaos magic, but appeared to emit unmitigated chaos damage as well. Was this merely a game mechanic, or is there some measure of lore that supports his ability to call upon chaos magic?

Same reason Archimonde had Divine armor.

Not sure I'd say that's an indication of using "chaos magic" exactly...
Chaos was a damage type you could apply to a unit's attacks through a number of ways and Chaos was treated as a way to ignore all armor and function as something that might be "true damage" in another game.
Yeah, they just got me with that big green chaos bolt on his character pane.
I'd also originally thought that the reason Cenarius' blessing gave Broxigar the power to wound Sargeras was because of a lore-side implementation of the Chaos damage mechanic reflected from his in-game ability to bypass mitigation with Chaos.
