Shadowlands could be used re-populate Azeroth- who'd you return to improve things?

It is an opportunity, something out of the ordinary is happening in Shadowlands, so for a little while the usaul order of things is going to be disrupted, no one can usually comeback from teh dead, but the living can't enter the realm of the dead either. So the shadowlands expansion can provide a once only ever opportunity to return some major characters and even re-populate some heavily depleted peoples.

Taking it further it could accelerate the recovery of the Azertoh nations and peoples - Yes this is not usual, but it is an opportunity they could take. So .. who would you bring?

    Kael'thas?
    Staghelm?
    Arthas?
    Ysera?
    Neltharion?
    Malygos?
    Krasus?
    Quel'thalas elves slaughtered in WC3?
Night elves slaughtered in WC3 and WoT?
    Farondis highborne?
    Lordaeron humans?
    Gnomes?
    Arathor humans?
    Amani Trolls?

Obviously I chose a lot of elven peoples, becasue since WC3, they've been the main races to suffer genocide and need re-populating. I'm sure you can think of loads more.

Pretty sure Blizz will use this to tie in the next villain coming back from the dead and we'll fight em in the real world to send them back. I don't know who, could even be someone new.

Pretty sure you can't do that. There'll be some technicality that states you can't bring too many people back from the dead or you end up disrupting the balance too much, and that will be why people can't spam that ability to bring everyone and their dog back from the afterlife.

The Void. A force of infinite hunger. Its whispers have broken the will of dragons... and lured even the titans' own children into madness. Sages and scholars fear the Void. But we understand a truth they do not. That the Void is a power to be harnessed... to be bent by a will strong enough to command it. The Void has shaped us... changed us. But you will become its master. Wield the shadows as a weapon to save our world... and defend the Alliance!

Um, aren't the people in the Shadowlands either transformed into blue humans, turned into zombies, or being tortured for being evil?

Because Blizzard is awesome and improving the story of characters when they rehash them. Please no. I don't even want to know what the current writers would do with these characters. But i guess there are really people out there who like these horridly flawed and idiotic moral lessons the story consists of today.

The best thing to do would be to return no one, and have a few people we went in with stay behind. Maybe most people; send the usual bevy of allies and have almost none of them return. A journey into the underworld should be perilous, and the dead should stay dead.

Plus shaking up the roster and thinning the herd a bit might give them a chance to start the next expansion off on fresh footing and take the game somewhere new and interesting.

Not anyone who would be summarily executed for war crimes, mass murder, or attempted mass murder as soon as they got back.

    So, that's a no to:
Kael'thas, Staghelm, Arthas, Neltharion, Malygos, and the Amani Trolls.

All of them are dead for a reason.
A gun is like a parachute. If you need one, and don’t have one, you’ll probably never need one again.

If those characters came back, one would expect that it wasn't due to our heroes intentionally loosing them on the world. It would presumably be more like a jailbreak with dramatic (boring) consequences to follow. "Oh Arthas got free, and he's got an army of the undead! We better go fight in a tournament for some reason."

Edit: okay what might be fun is if a bunch of the WoW rogues gallery got loose and in some way we get to follow their wacky misadventures as a villain team-up throughout Azeroth. Sinister Sixish.

    Garithos.

Make him high king of the Alliance to spice things up. So much potential drama.

I'd take this over whatever Blizzard can come up with any day.

Yep, something they can write an undo into the story when they get released just as easily as they wrote it in.

example: Tyrande demands the souls taken to fuel that imprisoned entity be returned to life, and the Farondis who seem half in one world and the other are allowed to fully be in the living world .

other groups make other deals too. For quel'thalas, Arthas sacrifices his chance for freedom by striking a deal to allow the Lordaeron and Quel'thalas victims he slaughtered to be returned, this atones him enough to be free of the Maw and into one of the other Covenants.

I don't know what story you can pulll for Kael'thas but i'm sure they would think of something if they wanted any of this to happen.

Not all the dead can return, so only the few that the living generation in Shadowlands can remember or justify get to work out some sort of deal/reward for fixing the problem at the end of the expansion. That's how I'd write it anyway.

It would be a good "miracle" level event in warcraft for a change.. besides I think they need the increased populations to throw away in later troubles and disasters.. it's becoming ridiculous to see numbers of nearly extinct races conveniently pop up in ridiculous quantities just for whatever scene is being painted out, and you're lie..hang on, there shouldn't be TAHT many around.

Ooo.. how woudl you write that one back? First they'd have to write a way that enough Shadowlands denizens recall their identities, so that Garithos can have his back in order to make a deal.. I don't think any one of our party would ask for Garithos back, his return would not be a reward requested by any current living NPC or the player.. so that avenue would be out.

You'd have to device a way he and a few others recover themselves - one way I can think of is that Garithos is in the maw, and people in the maw never forget who they are - as part of the punishment - but his crimes don't seem serious enough to warrant that. Kael'thas and Arthas could justifiably be in the maw, same with deathwing and maybe the story could have them keep their identities which is how some sort of deal is struck.

That is apparently a super long process that reshapes their souls over time, and a majority of the characters we met in WoW have only been dead for a few years.

Not that they should just bring back a bunch of dead characters. They absolutely shouldn't.

Indeed, however which is hat makes the sitaution just as unusual as us being able to go their in the first place. I'm just saying it allows blizzard to re-populate a lot of depleted races and provide some fuel for future conflicts or alternatively a rebuilding of those races.. remember night elves and thalassian elves are nearly extinct at this point.. returning the Farondis and the WoT victims would fix that, we know the Thalassian elf population is also gone, restoring the victims of the major wars only since then would be interesting.. imagine if the windrunner's brother and family returned.

The field day you could have with some of this stuff. Imagine how you could write Thalassian stories for blood/void/high elves if most of the high elves return? I'm excited even thinking about it.

On the night elf front, restoring WoT victims while nice, isn't that interesting as the scenario above, restoring the Farondis highborne is more interesting, as that group would jump from a Mage order to a nation, and that would make the night elves interesting now - make situations on the broken isle and the nightborne also far more interesting.

Lordaeron WC3 victims returning and King Teranas included - now that will also be very interesting, how that plays in with the forsaken, Calia, what it means for the present kingdom.. they could literally make a horde Lordaeron nation that has human and undead working side by side in a unique situation that doens't happen anywhere else.. this is also very interesting. It could make Loradaeron a neutral state with living and undead citizens allied to different factions or independent, with individuals choosing to join any faction they want, however that nation becomes a nation that is open to both horde and alliance visitors... they could also bring the same result to Quel'thalas and the Broken Isles since elves aren't core to the identity of the horde and alliance, having their states neutral with individuals or factions amongst them aligned to either faction is just one of many things you can do.

The biggest potential is the story development... it sort of reminds me of how the DC universe Crisis on Infinite Earth could shake up the current groups. If you watch the CW shows, it's a lot of fun to see how you could play with changes.

    The two biggest benefits:
    1. Something cool and beneficial actually happening to the story lines of the races
    2. Much increased populations can now allow for using NPCs and fodder for later conflicts

We both know that there is so little of so many people left in wow, you wonder how they're going to fight whatever new crisis or world ending threat comes. It needs a repopulation, and if you're not jumping 500 or even 1k years into the future, then this is how you get it.

They set all the rules, and create the exmptions here, just like us going there is an exemption.

However, I agree that a bunch of dead characters shouldn't return, maybe 1 or 2, but not everyone. I do however feel that some sizeable return would make things very interesting. REmember crisis on infinite earths in the DC comics? That shakes a lot of things up? What if King Terenas, Kael'thas, and a lot of WC3 slaughtered elves and humans returned, the Farondis highborne got to live fully in todays world and the WoT slaughtered return? - theses could provide very interesting new state of affairs and repopulate these races so they can use them as fodder again later or just leave them be. Almost like some sort of soft reset.

I agree not everyone should come back, but hey what if they did should also be considered.

The magic here guys is if blizzard can somehow bring back all those dead subs they have managed to kill off from Cata forward. It would be nice. Just saying.

I'd return the playerbase, but Shadowlands isn't capable of doing that unfortunately.

Kael'thas needs a redemption arc. Holycrap his transition from WC3 to TBC was absurd as hell. It made 0 sense. I want them to bring him back as a new, cleansed person

No. Let dead people stay dead.

    Come up with new characters
This world don't give us nothing. It be our lot to suffer... and our duty to fight back.

    Kael'thas? YES
    Staghelm? no
    Arthas? YES
    Ysera? yes
    Neltharion? no
    Malygos? YES
    Krasus? no

Quel'thalas elves slaughtered in WC3? no, it would belittle that event. Kael'thas is enough.
Night elves slaughtered in WC3 and WoT? No.
    Farondis highborne? No.
    Lordaeron humans? No, they're Forsaken.
    Gnomes? Meh.
    Arathor humans? No.
    Amani Trolls? Uh, only Zul'jin.

Really, I just want important figures like Arthas, Kael'thas, Zul'jin, Malygos, and Ysera back.
