unfortunately it is factually correct to call the burning of teldrassil a genocide and while the blood elf rpers of the world will scramble over themselves to say that it isn't because uh "political affiliation.... sylvanas was only killing their entire race because uh... they were part of the alliance" while they have stormfront open in another tab, sylvanas's own thoughts in the books let us know that she was attempting to destroy the night elves as a nation. but to be more precise the war of thorns itself was the genocide, a could even more precisely be defined as a "war of annihilation" in which the goal is the complete annihilation of a state, a people or an ethnic minority through genocide or through the destruction of their livelihood.
its far more interesting to read into the real world politics of the war of thorns because as desperate as the mods will be to pretend that it has no relation to any real world events that took place and we should not mention them, the war of thorns was directly, purposefully and obviously modelled on nazi rhetoric, as everyone who played or kept up with the beta will remember. sylvanas's explanation for the war of thorns kept changing, at one stage it was a manifest destiny style ethnic cleansing of kalimdor, and later it was just the lebensraum in kalimdor including sylvanas basically using the 14 words verbatim to explain why the horde needed to embark on this quest for genocide. therefore, the only way the war of thorns can be meaningfully discussed is by discussing the actual nazi rhetoric upon which the story was deliberately based.
jesus i bet we are all glad azerite exists now because in the end making it supposedly about magical crystals sure took some of the overwhelming nazi thematics out of the war of thorns. however really it just pushed it to the sidelines because as it turns out when you start out with your story based on importing a nazi style war of extermination into your fantasy rpg it actually doesn't just wash out. the war of thorns is still an ethnic cleansing and almost worked.
so it makes me wonder why did blizzard do this? i mean obviously saurfang got his redemption in the end by dying so he wouldn't have to actually answer for any of his crimes, but why would blizzard make the previously beloved horde, including the horde player character, into actual nazis? and now that they have done that, and it is inarguable that that is not only what they did, but what they intended to do with the war of thorns, how is it possible to move on from this point?
as you'll remember from your history class, when nazi germany was defeated in the real world, the leadership was dismantled and the state went through a long period of restructuring. what the allied nations didn't do was get rid of the head of state and then leave all of his loyal underlings to run things. this is basically the core problem of where the story is at now. because we are human beings with functioning brains and a grasp of history and the concepts of things like justice and common sense, we understand that the story is not only unresolved, but fundamentally unresolvable.
the horde were turned into fantasy nazis, but they didn't get a credible turn away from the state of being fantasy nazis. and so here we are. the horde are still fantasy nazis but blizzard wants to convince us they aren't anymore without actually doing anything to make that so. sadly all the authorial intent in the world isn't enough to convince thinking human beings that nazis can be whitewashed.
but i think i've said enough so what do you think? why were the horde, including the horde player character, forced into the role of nazi germany in a war deliberately written to parallel the nazi lebensraum? why did blizzard think this was an acceptable story to put in an rpg played by kids, with many of those kids placed into the role of these fantasy nazis with no option given to opt out or speak against the nazi actions they were being forced by the game developers to undertake?
