It's best doing it as the last thing and then never going doing the final mission.
That's not actually possible, unless I've misunderstood you.
I didn't like the Citadel DLC much, although I know it's a fan favourite. I thought the entire casino section was awful and the final 'boss fight' was annoying as fuck. The fan service moments with the team were nice, and the art for the new areas was 10/10, but I felt the DLC as a whole was too wacky to feel like it belonged in the game. The idea of giving the team some respite before the final push was a good one, but it would have been better integrated into the game rather than awkwardly tacked on after most people had already completed it.
You don't play with heavy pistols often...they DO one shot almost everything. In fact, I think the biggest 'flaw' with pistol one shots is the cutscene in ME 1 where Shepard gets shot with a pistol and his shield eats it with no consequence. Where do shields go during cutscenes?
Finally got it, started off with a Vanguard for once instead of my usual Soldier route. Will it be as terrible as I think it will be? Going for insanity runs obviously.

i unequipped my pistol to get more power recharge bonus.
quite the immersion breaker when your character materializes a pistol for custscenes out of thin air, and then when the cutscene ends your helm magically pops into existence again. assault rifles were funny too, about 50/50 if i was using the equipped one or the default one.
Vanguard is some of the best fun I ever had in ME2/3 (not played one in the original yet). Whittle down packs from a distance and then charge in and blow their head off with a shotgun. High risk high reward, you'll need to be more tactical with your gameplay than with a soldier.
...and the old bugs are still here... Teammates afking in corridors, right click can lock you up in an animation in which you can't turn...

I'll just spec into bullet sponge vanguard and see how that goes. I remember people saying it was rough, at least for ME1.
ME2 Vanguard really isn't so bad once you can the full Barrier on charge upgrade and then the Claymore and enough research for one-hit kills on grunts. But yeah, before that it's very much a glass cannon. The initial ambush on the Collector Ship is the absolute worst part due to more often than not being unable to Charge to enemies, either on purpose or due to different elevation levels not agreeing with the ability.
Novaguard is indeed great, that is until you charge into too many Cerberus/Geth troops like a headless chicken and get cut down before you even get the ability back. The Omega DLC has a tendency to put in many troops at once for just that reason it seems.

The internet: where to every action is opposed an unequal overreaction.
Not strictly chronologically perhaps, but the game does dump you back before the Cerberus base after doing the whole starchild segment. Saving Citadel for afterwards as opposed to before you hit up the ending leaves far less of a sour aftertaste of ME3 than what putting the game down just after the starchild segment and all the assorted problems it has does.
Citadel DLC aim is to be fun relaxing mission, you really can't do Citadel post final mission when potentially all living beings are dead or best case scenario where you win from the reapers but millions died and entire planets got devastated.
It's like having a party after your country just survived a devastating war and people can't get food. Would that really be the time to have the DLC take place?
BroShep voice is the voice of someone who would be getting his legs cut and his only response would be "well, this could be a problem", stoic and unmovable
FemShep voice is the voice of someone who would get absolutely sad she stepped on a hanar tentacle, absolutely emotional
Both are great depending on your playstyle, femshep for renegade, broshep for paragon
Sure, as I said in and of itself it's a great send-off but... I dunno, partying after Thessia or Sanctuary, while the rest of the Citadel is full of grieving people and stacked refugees feels so out of place to me, as does the seemingly normal life in the parts of the Citadel you visit in the DLC. The main game does insist on the fact that people on the station are somewhat sheltered but still.
Anyway, I finished the Omega DLC, the one I never bought previously, and it was pretty good, save for some jankier than usual animations in place. I know people generally consider it ME3's weaker DLC and I can understand that, but IMO it's still better than any in ME2 save LOTSB. The Rampart mechs are fun to fight, Aria is a riot to be around, and Omega's top-notch atmosphere is identical to ME2's.
ME3 really is a great game. It plays well, the vast majority of the writing is good, the RPG systems are simple but effective. It's such a damn shame about the rest of the writing and the atrocious ending. Fix those things and the game's a masterpiece.

This song was all over the place back in 2015.
It is also the perfect song for the Citadel DLC.
Yeah, Vanguard ME1 is garbage, still getting oneshot randomly at level 16.
Almost finished my first run through of ME1 - just about to hit Virmire. Been doing Engineer on legendary. Only real issues I've had are with snipers, who can seemingly one shot you, and a couple of krogan who managed to get into melee range. Engineers may have good shields but you are squishy under them.
But once I hit on the solution they stopped being a concern. Hit them with overload (and engineers get really big rapid recharge overloads) to strip their shields. Then hit them with a sniper rifle loaded with the rounds that increase force. Things cant attack you if they are being rag-dolled around the map. Its frankly hilarious.
I actually stopped taking Liara as lift/singularity/throw just makes it too easy.
