The Biden administration announced Wednesday it will cancel seven Trump-era oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and protect more than 13 million acres in the federal National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska, stymieing a years-long attempt to drill in the protected region.

The cancellation will affect Alaska’s state-owned oil development agency, the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority, which bought the leases covering about 365,000 acres on ANWR’s Coastal Plain during the Trump administration.

“With today’s action, no one will have rights to drill for oil in one of the most sensitive landscapes on Earth,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland told reporters on a press call. “Public lands belong to all Americans, and there are some places where oil and gas drilling and industrial development simply do not belong.”

The 2017 GOP tax bill opened a small part of the pristine wildlife refuge for drilling, a measure championed by Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a Republican. But it was never developed or drilled – or came close to doing so. Haaland suspended the leases in June 2021, and some major oil companies, including Chevron, canceled their leases in the area the following year.

Still hardly perfect, but on the balance Biden continues to largely do plenty more good than bad. This is very nice, even if it didn't seem like there was much interest from oil companies.

They still have to re-lease the land and all, but can set some stricter limits around environmental concerns, if there's even any real interest in that land. But hey, I guess that's what Republicans needed to get Murkowski's vote in 2017 for their disastrous tax cut that remains historically unpopular.

I bet you that is 46% of registered republicans would rather any republican over Biden. I highly doubt a significant number of democrats would vote as such in this poll....unless the usual tactic of unclear questions were being asked.

We get it, Biden is too old and Trump is awful. Unfortunately we don't have any other options developing, so as we tend to do in this country, we pick the lesser of two evils and keep working on improving things as best we can.

CNBC's reporting is better, and says what we've all thought. Did you honestly think Biden is popular? That Trump is?

EDIT - Correction, CNBC is citing a Wall Street Journal poll, different from the one CNN reported on. I still like the WSJ poll better because it doesn't oversample.

Meh. Projecting way too far out of course but I think the biggie is Saudi, Russia and OPEC I guess decreasing production of oil and raising prices. Sadly Americans are too stupid and will just blame that their 2 mile per gallon truck now costs $100 to fill. That if we did some alternative energy, aka green this doesn't happen. Again, Americans think we can drill our way out.

Also I'm still not happy how Dems and other think economy is fine when housing/rent is crazy on top of that we fight inflation with just higher interests rates, which now you can't even afford a house.

Yes if it its Trump can the Dems win on everything he is facing. Yes, abortion is very good, and I hope people don't forget or get lulled asleep that Republicans would never touch abortion nationally.

Biden has done some things, but I always criticize Dems for being passive and trying to always win on Republican failures than policies. We will see. Too far out.

and most people who identify as "centrist" from my experience are just far right, theyll be like " i like the none woke nationalist of the right, but i could get behind some socialist economic policies" and trick thimselves into thinking nationalist socialism is centrism

If this is the best Trump supporters have, you're not going to like 2024 very much. Trump lived in NYC, his statement was "no pictures" and to invent crowds of cheering people he saw at the time.

The difference is abundantly clear. One person got a day wrong. The other is a deplorable felon. Why anyone would simp for Trump is anyone's guess.

It's not Biden's age per se. It's the decline caused by his age. Some remain sprightly and on the ball into their 90s. Sadly not so for Biden. As Matthew d'Ancona has put it in today's opinion piece entitled Joe Biden is no longer mentally well enough to be president:

Yes, the article I linked acknowledges what you say in your first sentence. Not sure why you're referencing the GOP in response to me though, as the article was written by a British journalist for a British newspaper. I don't think he's a secret Trump supporter, being so vocally critical of him for years.
